Thompson to Dobson (take a hike)
NRO ^ | 10/4/2007 | Byron York

It hasn't gotten much comment yet, but in his interview on Fox last night, Fred Thompson rather emphatically told Focus on the Family chief James Dobson to take a hike. Host Sean Hannity asked Thompson about Dobson, who has attacked Thompson and made it clear he would not support a Thompson candidacy. "Don't read too much into the Dobson thing," Thompson told Hannity, continuing:

A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone. I did have one of his aides call me up and kind of apologize, the first time he attacked me and said I wasn't a Christian…

I don't know the gentleman. I do know that I have a lot of people who are of strong faith and are involved in the same organizations that he is in, that I've met with, Jeri and I both have met with, and I like to think that we have some strong friendships and support there…

Hannity then asked: "Would you want to have a conversation with Dr. Dobson? Do you think that might help?"

I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune.

But you weren’t making a point—unless you fancied my reference to a third party referred only to the MSM rumors that Dobson was thinking of launching one if Rudy got the GOP nomination. I wasn’t. Enough FReepers have expressed the view that out of moral Christian moral conviction they will vote for a third party or stay home rather than vote for Guiliani to support my statement.

Asking if someone still believe the MSM in response to a post the content of which is independent of MSM reports makes no point at all. I wasn’t offended, just mystified.

“Wonder who he’s really shilling for”

Was for Newt who left his dying wife for some younger squeeze (Hows that for Christian behavior) Now I think he’s lining up for Huckabee.

A very good post. And to the rest of the born-agains and holier-than-thous on this post. Please familarize yourself with the prodigal son and the hiring of the servents during the course of the day. Two of my favorite’s in the New Testament. One says that if you leave God, he will accept you if you return. Not only accept you but will meet you more than halfway. Just make the effort and God is there. The second one - no matter what time of the day - your life - you come to work for God, everyone gets the same reward. I beleive most born-agains have a hang-up with that one.

You don’t get it! Telling a child he is doing wrong is not judging him, it’s judging the behavior. Telling the child not to hang out with a certain kid is judging the other kid. As I said, if we adhere to the strict interpertation, we are not allowed to do that.

If you have not already answered in a later post, why does it sound stupid to you?

Did you ask me to forgive you? What sin do you confess, and ask forgiveness for? I thought you still loved your sins. If I’ve said something inaccurate, point it out.

But you’re right, I should have prayed for you. That was a failure. Forgive me, please. I will remedy it.

OK, I read your link. And to me it comes across as damage control by Dobson.

Even giving him the benefit of the doubt, he’s enough of a political figure to realize he should take care to not make reckless or off-hand comments about politicians, especially when he hasn’t even met the person.

Why would he automatically assume Thompson isn’t a Christian? Why jump to that conclusion? Did he think Fred is a muslim? A Jew? An atheist?

Dobson at minimum spoke out of turn and had to backpedal on it. Frankly, I think his original comment is far more telling.

didn't mean to mystify you.

I do see the Christian Right removing themselves from the Republican Party if Rudy obtains the nomination....but beyond that...this article in mho is nothing more than a 'divide and conquer' the Republican Party article....I am surprised at the number of people who took the bait, hook, line and sinker, all in one gulp.

Dear Theo,

From your link:

“He added that although he did not know Fred Thompson personally, the former senator had never expressed a statement of faith to his knowledge, and Dr. Dobson assumed the former senator was not a Christian.”

So, I guess that unless someone “express[es] a statement of faith” of which Dr. Dobson is personally aware, Dr. Dobson assumes that the person isn’t a Christian.

Sorry, that pretty much substantiates the charge against Dr. Dobson. Out of massive ignorance, he assumed that Sen. Thompson wasn’t a Christian.

I like Dr. Dobson, I think he’s a good guy. But on this one, he’s got his head firmly wedged where the sun doesn’t ever shine.

Are you saying Dobson DIDN'T say "I don't believe he is a Christian"? Where has Dobson taken the time to explain himself, not through some intermediary, what he meant?

Sorry, not buying it. What he said was as clear as a blue sky. You can try to spin it any way you want, we all see it for what it is.

Hi Carton.

I think I did answer that here and, more so, here.

In this particular case, don't blame your strawman, the "old media" for trying to divide the party. I would say Dobson is doing a prett good job on his own.

Your several posts on this thread keep getting more ethereal. However, I don't question your obviously heart-felt feelings and emotions.

A post I made on another thread bears repeating here. It's surprising how many folks think that Dobson is a man of the cloth.

Actually, he is neither minister, priest, TV evangelist, bishop nor pope.

He is a layman - a licensed psychologist in private practice.

I think you need to reread your Bible - specifically the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus commands us to love our enemies. I take that to mean to forgive them as well - something I have a hard time doing. Or do you like to withold your forgiveness, holding it out as a bargaining chip. Get thee behind me! I’m tired of arguing with those who think they have a direct link to God. Nothing I will say or do will ever measure up to your brand of Christianity.

I love it when non-Christians lecture me on how to be a Christian. It’s so cute! Can I lecture you on how to be a pagan? Well, that’s different; I do have some experience of that.

Yes, the Sermon on the Mount is three wonderful chapters in a book with over 30,000 verse. Here’s another one: “If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him” (Luke 17:3). Now, you’re not my brother, but you did see that “if”?

I’m so glad Jesus doesn’t put me to the insanity of “forgiving” someone a sin he still loves and clings to. How insulting that would be.

You understand that Dobson never said that?
__________

Really? Here is material (http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/070328/28dobson.htm) that I found quoted “[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian; at least that’s my impression,”.

Fred (or Duncan Hunter) is my choice — a Thompson/Hunter ticket would be best case for 2008.

However, Thompson might want to go easy on the justifiably discontent Conservative Christians that have been a part of the Republican coalition for 30 years. If he pushes them out, HE will be the reason we have a President Hillary — NOT Conservative Christians.
