Ranking the GOP contenders (Hunter at bottom)
MSNBC ^ | 10.10.07

Posted on 10/10/2007 6:15:33 AM PDT by meandog

Rudy Giuliani Former New York City mayor Last Ranking: 1 Stars are aligning. It's not his nomination to lose, but there's a clear path to win for him. The latest NBC/WSJ poll shows that three out of four GOP voters care more about issues Giuliani can prove he's conservative on (terrorism, taxes and education/health care) than issues he struggles with re: conservatism (moral values and immigration).

Mitt Romney Former Massachusetts governor Last Ranking: 3 After languishing a bit for the last month, it seems Romney's camp has a plan for how to tackle Rudy: Ignore Thompson and try to make this a two-person race again.

Fred Thompson Former Tennessee senator Last Ranking: 2 If anyone is in need of a re-launch, it's Thompson.

John McCain Arizona senator Last Ranking: 5 His base (the media) seems desperate to deal him back in, but what's going to happen to McCain if he loses in Iowa to Paul and Huckabee?

Yeah, it really bothers me that he pronounces Rudy's last name so badly. How hard IS it to say Jewel-ee-on-ee???

I think we have a great group to choose from--especially after seeing the debate last night. (with the definite exception of RP!!!)

I'm sorry, but to me there there is just a certain air of unreality to a Giuliani candidacy.

To take just one example, I have a hard time imagining the actual mechanics of a Giuliani nomination.

Would the existing party's leaders alter it's planks on issues like abortion and stem-cell research, or would a convention dominated by Giuliani supporters rewrite the party platform on such issues, or would he take the stage to accept the nomination promising to campaign against the party platform or to to promise somehow split the difference ("I support the right to choose, but I promise to appoint Justices who support the right to life")?

Would there be a Republican party, as we understand it, left standing afterwards?

It's just very, very hard for me to comprehend how this would work.

There’s not 13 months left...primaries start up in January... Thompson can’t rely on the “not Rudy” vote, he has to actually acquire voters on HIS merits as well...

Watch Hunter's entire 6 minute face time in the two hour "debate" here:

Duncan Hunter, Dearborn, MI Debate, 10-09-07

You can hear Hissy hissing in the background on one of the questions trying to get him to shut up. Meanwhile, during a "30 second" round they allowed Paul to rant for close to a minute and a half.

Fred Thompson Former Tennessee senator Last Ranking: 2 If anyone is in need of a re-launch, it’s Thompson.

LOL I just love spin....Mitt who has spent a fortune to lead in Iowa might be the one in need of a relaunch, since he is behind Fred here.

Laughing with the glee.

Report on Hunter: "No reason to rank him anymore" (BARF)

It's true. He literally repeated the same information about China three times in the debate yesterday, nearly verbatim. Not only that, but he told the same store about only being able to find a single American contractor for a defense item that he told in another one of the debates. He also looked stiff and irrelevant, though not as irrelevant as Tancredo or Brownback. All three of them should drop out of the race immediately. They have all failed to gain any traction.

MSNBC admits that they want a Giuliani-Romney Northeastern Liberalfest.

“”1. Rudy Giuliani “Stars are aligning.”
2. Mitt Romney “The good news for Romney? The media seems ready to bite.”
3. Fred Thompson
4. John McCain
5. Ron Paul
6. Mike Huckabee “can we acknowledge that the reason he isn’t getting more traction is that he — not Thompson — is the laziest Republican in the field? Had Huckabee done the hard work two years ago of courting donors and then been willing to go a million miles on a plane to talk to folks who could build a campaign (not simply put his face on TV or his words in print), he’d be in the first tier, raising $8 million or $9 million a quarter.”
7. Sam Brownback There’s no real reason to rank him any more.
8. Duncan Hunter There’s no real reason to rank him any more.
9. Tom Tancredo There’s no real reason to rank him any more. “”

I really like Duncan Hunter. Those who watched — how do you think he did? I did not see the debates.

I really like him too. But I thought his performance last night was bad. He kept repeating the same thing over and over about China, and his other comments just didn't seem to resonate with anyone in the audience (unfortunately).

The article goes on to say, "It'll be interesting to see which of the front-runners actually 'gets it' and tries to co-opt some of Paul's supporters." I think a candidate who comes out with a hard-line small-government but pro-defense message can benefit from a defection by the less committed (or committable) Paul supporters. Fred can certainly be this candidate if he can clearly and forcefully articulate that his "first principles" would, in a Thompson Administration, include a strong push for a drastic reduction in the size, scope, intrusiveness, and expense of the federal government.

I did think that Freds strongest part of the debate was his answers to WOT. That was what I was looking for, and honestly Mitt fell in my estimation for that topic (otherwise I though Mitt was good), but to tell you the truth, he still didn't show leadership of those issues.

When it comes to WOT, Fred did go up in my book. He will not however, move up to my #1 until I truly think he can beat Hillary, and sorry I did not see him beating anyone last night. He was middle of the pack, and we need more. He has a few more months to prove himself, so maybe a foreign policy debate will improve his chances, but I just did not see him attracting any new voters last night, and if he can't do that in his own party primaries how is he to do that with the general public.

I thought Duncan Hunter did great. Especially in the beginning. Towards the end, although he did not falter, I think some of the others “caught” up so finished middle of the pack. I don’t think he had any huge blunders (depending on what your attitude on Free Trade is).

"My top 3 choices are Hunter, Thompson and Romney. They could combine in any way, and I'd be OK."

I'd have to agree with you there.

In a head to head matchup with Hitlery, I wonder which of the three candidates would fare best?

I really think that the atty thing is a direct result of the left's making life so difficult for W..and W having to check out so much before doing ANYthing. The reality is that the left is waiting to pounce and you better have your ducks in a row before making a move, or they'll start screaming "impeach" again and again.

I'm a Hunter lover, but I really think Romney MEANT to say that you make sure you're making decisions that are legal.

I'm SURE glad I don't have to speak "under a microscope" like these guys. EVERY phrase is dissected and scrutinized...it is NOT easy to do. You have to check the words multiple times in your head, before they leave your mouth. We need to give them all a break.

I agree. I'm a Hunter lover, but I would like to see Giuliani debate with Hillary though...THAT would be fun to watch, too.

Oh heck...put her in the middle and have our guys around her and up a level and let the games begin ;-)
