Thompson 'Terrible' in Chinagate Probe, Critics Say
Cybercast News Service ^ | October 10, 2007 | Fred Lucas

(CNSNews.com) - On Tuesday, the day Fred Thompson made his debate debut in the 2008 presidential race, two conservative commentators criticized how the former Tennessee senator handled the 1990s Senate probe into Clinton campaign fundraising corruption.

Thompson was chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee in 1997, when the committee probed Chinese money that allegedly poured into the 1996 re-election campaign of President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore.

"Had there been a legitimate investigation of Chinese money laundering, the results would have been very different from the results of Monica Lewinsky," said John Gizzi, political editor for Human Events, the conservative weekly newspaper.

Gizzi was contrasting Clinton's campaign finance scandal - which he deemed far more serious - with the sex and perjury scandal that led to Clinton's impeachment in the House and acquittal in the Senate in the late 1990s.

Duncan Hunter, of course.

Good grief, Hunter is awesome! Thanks for posting that, I hadn't seen it.

The Clinton flunkies in the “news” media were of no use of course. He could have committed murder on live TV and they’d cover up for him. Hillary too.

Et tu, Sheena?

Perhaps you've been too long in the jungle, but even that old curmudgeon, Bob Novak, wrote an article delineating and praising Jeri Thompson's professional achievements in her chosen career of big league politics (before she met Fred, BTW).

She also achieved motherhood with two darling crumb crunchers, a commendable achievement in itself.

Pray tell me why would I be "kidding" when I comment on women of achievement in the Republican Party?

Fred had no support from the Democrats and RINOS in the Senate, who, as a group, could and did block most of what came out of his committee. He wasn't a dictator, and he couldn't demand anything of the committee.

Hindsight is always 20/20, and there are always going to be those who will come down from the hills, after the battle, to shoot the wounded.

The term ‘Slick Willard’ has been used as a reference for Clinton, and now to use it on Romney and compare him to the traitor is a hideous and repulsive tactic.

Wrong. X42 was "Slick WILLIE", and no one has ever compared Mitt Romney to him. I guess Mitt's first name is Willard, so they add the Slick to his name because of some of his positions that seem to move around. I saw this when he ran against Teddy Kennedy in MA for the Senate. By the time the election rolled around, I had a hard time telling exactly which was was more conservative!

I haven't seen Fred voters spamming Romney threads, but have seen exactly the opposite on many Fred threads. And it WAS mainly Romney supporters who pushed the negativity about Jeri when that picture of her in the evening gown was first published. I've NEVER seen anything negative written by a Fred supporter about Ann Romney, on the contrary, many have mentioned what a lovely and gracious woman she is.

Regardless, we should be voting on the CANDIDATES' records, not what their wives might be wearing on the campaign trail, NOR the antics of their supporters on this forum or any other.

“Single, but still reeling from the painful breakup of a 10-year romance, Jeri stayed in touch with Fred. ‘I was never an older-man-dater kind of girl before,’ she says. Sparks flew only later when the couple had lunch in Washington, where Jeri had moved in 1998. Jeri says she was entranced by Fred’s passion for his subject that afternoon, a campaign finance investigation; he caught her attention with a single phrase. ‘He said, I want to “lift the curtain” so people understand,’ she recalls. Clifford May, who hired her as a media strategist for the Republican National Committee, says he took a chance on the D.C. newcomer because she was ‘bright and energetic’; she was also, by then, a close friend of a Republican senator.”

Actually, she was involved with Fred when she was hired by the RNC. There is actually nothing in terms of professional achievements in her life, before Fred.

I agree. And Duncan is my first choice. I don’t like to see a guy get slandered. I’ll defend Bush if he’s taken to task unfairly, and I’m not a fan believe me.

Actually, it was mentioned a number of times that witnesses had fled. Note that the Senate leadership didn’t compell these people to stay in country. And we were in charge at the time.

I agree. Look, I support Duncan Hunter first. What I don’t want to do is see a guy that’s not quite as good, but might be much more viable get shot down unfairly.

If I’d have mentioned Duncan in my comments, it could have drug this off point. I wanted to address the hit-job on Thompson on it’s own merits.

I appreciate your response and I do agree. Thanks.

Point well taken and your original post was right on point. Fred Thompson can hardly be held to blame for the amazing failure to do something about the Clintons. The blame for that stretches nation wide.

If Fred wakes up and wins the nomination, Team Hiliary will be a hell of lot tougher than the comments at this site.

True, but I expect Clinton supporters to act like juveniles and thugs. I guess I expected better from "conservatives."

It is the whole nation’s responsibility isn’t it. It’s sad to say, but the populace of this nation has come to the point that they couldn’t rationally evaluate the Clintons and demand their removal from public office.

There are some really strange people out there, and if the Clintons were to get the White House again, I know there would be many people who would be just fine with them refusing to leave.

We live in interesting times. Thanks for your response.

Ah Sheena, the class act among the Mittwitts... Desperate? Right, my guy is ahead of yours in the polls despite the money spent, and number one by far here on FR, so I am sitting quite nice. However, what feeds comments such as:

“I don’t care who you support or oppose.....I just know you’re a misogynist and disgrace to this forum.......and to Republican women of achievement, to boot.”

Uh, if you’re referring to Jeri...you’re kidding, right?

(to stevemckings pictures) LOL! Love the pictures! How true.

That’s just gross. Greasy and slick?? Look at Thompson... he looks like a dirty old man.

OMG. She’s hot? Are you vision impaired? She’s right...she’s no trophy wife.

Fred’s wife has claimed she’s no ‘trophy’ wife. She’s right. Based on her looks, mannerisms and way of dressing, she’s definitely no trophy wife. Take a look and then listen to Mitt’s wife...ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner.

He looks good? OMG. He looks like the creature from the black lagoon.

OMG..she looks like a hooker. (home of my hooker comment)

I agree - he doesn’t look well. He’s already had Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. It’s supposedly in remission.

Sheesh, what an ugly wedding dress. The ‘bouquet’ is so huge it looks like she’s carrying a rifle. I just can’t envision this woman as First Lady. No way.

There’s just something creepy about Thompson and his female conquest days - even though his former ‘girlfriends’ still ‘adore’ him, he’s had way too many liasons for me - I believe the real reason he got married is for appearance purposes in his bid for the White House - believe me, he’s been thinking about this for a long time. I want someone with some real family values and I don’t believe Fred is it.

Sweetheart, I'd claim desperation because if these are not from desperation, well..

he United States is a nation of immigrants That makes me sick and I am a child of immigrants. The US existed before immigrants came. We were founded by citizens, with a largely common culture.

That tells me everything I need to know right there.
