From the Back of the Pack

(snip)

...it’s quickly clear that Huckabee is as good a campaigner as anybody running for president this year. And before too long it becomes easy to come up with ( seven ) reasons why he might have a realistic shot at winning the Republican nomination:

(snip, snip, snip)

Huckabee has some significant flaws as a candidate. His foreign policy thinking is thin. Some of his policy ideas seem to come off the top of his head (he vows, absurdly, to make the U.S. energy independent within eight years).

But Huckabee is something that the party needs. He is a solid conservative who is both temperamentally and substantively different from the conservatives who have led the country over the past few years.

He’s rising in the polls, especially in Iowa. His popularity with the press corps suggests he could catch a free media wave that would put him in the top tier. He deserves to be there.

When I read the title, I was thinking McCain. I’m suprised to see how well he’s rebounded from exile.

I guess Huckabee’s abysmal record on taxes was overlooked by this writer? Huckabee gets TERRIBLE ratings from fiscal conservatives and he is the “consensus” candidate?

This guy is rooting for Huckabee because he knows he couldn’t beat Hillary.

They forgot about his open borders stance, as well.

And this?

“He condemns “immoral” C.E.O. salaries”

If that’s the going price, that’s the going price. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to get ticked off about that. Not that I’ll ever be a CEO.

I was a bit surprised to see the following, though:

“His Legislature in Arkansas was 90 percent Democratic”

Is that true? Geez! I knew Arkansas was a bit odd at times, but this takes the cake! I looked, and presently, there are 8 Republicans and 27 Democrats.

Odd...

The House is 25:75, as well.

Money quotes:

“”He is... both temperamentally and substantively different from the conservatives...

Huckabee is the one candidate acceptable to all [liberal] factions...

unlike the first generation of politically engaged Christian conservatives, Huckabee is not at war with mainstream America...

on global trade he sounds like a Democrat...

His popularity with the press corps suggests he could catch a free media wave...””

Ahh, yes, the liberals are telling us, yet again, that a guy that’s as liberal as anyone in the 1980’s is a ‘mainstream’ choice for Republicans.

Fifth, though you wouldn’t know it from the past few years, the working class is the backbone of the G.O.P. Huckabee is most in tune with these voters.

If I have to read one more time in one of these liberal newsrags that Huckabee is their definition of a “Conservative” just because he is a minister and is pro-life....I’m gonna puke all over my keyboard. He has two conservative positions. On the other 150 he is a complete liberal. No wonder the Times likes him.

“Huckabee has some significant flaws as a candidate.”

An understatement if there ever was one.

When I read the title, I was thinking McCain. I’m suprised to see how well he’s rebounded from exile.

McCain's rebounded? The last few months of Rasmussen Reports numbers show him between 8% and 15%, the vast majority of the numbers are 10-11 range, especially this last month. Even Mitt is usually higher than that, and he still leads the IA and NH numbers, there is no state that McCain leads in, or even comes in second, if I recall correctly.

But back to Huckabee, the lamestream media would love to suck votes over to this nanny stater. Their fondest wish is a divided Republican convention, to contrast with Hillary's coronation that will take place earlier in the summer of 2008.
