Live Updating Thread: 2007 Southern California Firestorms
LA Times ^ | 9:35 AM PDT, October 21, 2007 | Associated Press

UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Local tv coverage is off for now, but the only thing the 11:00 news reported that you guys haven’t already mentioned is that military families at Camp Pendleton have been told to prepare to evacuate (has anyone else heard this?) and downed power lines across the I-15 have closed the road completely until at least 6 am. All the small roads through the mountains south of 138 are already closed. Thousands of cars are backed up north of DeVore in winds so strong they are knocking over 18 wheelers that aren’t moving! The 14 is also closed, which leaves I-5 as the only northbound road still open. If they evacuate Oceanside/Pendleton that’s a lot of people using the same freeway.

My old street our old house is the only one standing...and then dozens gone. It’s hit or miss. It’s so surreal watching this and knowing people on every street named. I’m sitting here with the church directory comparing addresses b/c I literally know a person per street listed on the lists or said.

See my post #2000. I hope it helps. Locally, people have been writing about a possible evacuation all night. Pendleton is right next to the city of Fallbrook and they are having a horrible fire. God Bless our Marines and keep them all safe tonight!

Thanks yorkie. We are keeping an eye on the fire in De Luz/Temecula about 5 miles away on the coastal ridge, which we can see from our street. So far we are upwind and there hasn’t been any evacuation alerts yet.

There’s gotta be a special place in Heaven for fire-fighters. A place where the air is always clear and pure, and the temperature is always just the perfect balance of cool/warm. Never too cold or too hot for these heroes.

Oceanside and Camp Pendleton are a very long drive away from the 14 Freeway, at least 1 1/2 hours - three hours, depending on traffic and if you go the speed limit.

The 5 can be a nightmare during traffic, but if they had to evacuate Oceanside and Camp Pendleton it would be a well planned out maneuver.

Fire Has Reportedly Jumped Highway 18 In Running Springs
Update 1:00 AM
According to John Miller of the US Forest Service, anyone remaining in Green Valley Lake must evacuate now. Because of the imminent danger from the fire, all remaining fire and law enforcement personnel are being evacuated immediately.

Running Springs - According to the California Highway Patrol, the fire has jumped Highway 18 in Running Springs. The fire has reportedly reached Pali Camp. Heavy embers are reported to be falling near Fire Station 51. Eyewitnesses in the Crestline area report that the fire has not advanced much toward Dart Canyon. However, the flame activity has appeared to increase.

There are reports of multiple structure fires on Wilderness Drive and in the 31-thousand block of Circle View Drive in Running Springs. There was an unconfirmed new fire start was reported on Live Oak Drive east of Ferndale Drive in Running Springs. Deputies have stopped looters in the 30-thousand block of Elfin Court in Running Springs.

The Slide and Grass Complex Fire has shown no sign of laying down over night. Officials have all but given up on Green Valley Lake at this time, and are evacuating all emergency officials. Also, the fire is approaching the Upper Rowco area of Running Springs with property damage reported along Wilderness Drive. The fire is making a hard run to the west toward Heaps Peak and Santa’s Village, according to witnesses, and may reach those areas by morning. The Grass Fire portion, burning near Lake Arrowhead, has been making a run to the west and southwest this evening. Resources are deployed in the Twin Peaks area near the Calvary Chapel Conference Center. Witnesses report that the fire is also backing down a ridge line toward the eastern portions of Dart Canyon.

Mandatory evacuations are now in effect for Crestline, Twin Peaks, North Lake Arrowhead, Crest Park, Skyforest, Rimforest, Running Springs, Arrowbear Lake, and Green Valley Lake. Voluntary evacuations are in effect for Cedar Glen, South Lake Arrowhead, Valley of Enchantment and Cedarpines Park.

Radio towers now burning?
This was just posted regarding San Miguel Mountain, in San Diego:

http://sosdfireblog.blogspot.com/

I drove to see the St. Miguel fire a few minutes ago and the entire mountain is ablaze. It seems the fire line is 5 miles long. It has crested the ridge and the winds appear to be shifting SE. There appeared to be many homes in the area and very little police activity as recently as 1AM. I hope the residents are made aware soon. It seems this fire is not going to go away as there is nobody fighting it. Apparently some radio towers for PBS, KUSI, and NBC are on top of the mountain and burning from what I hear on the radio.
