LA Times ^ | 9:35 AM PDT, October 21, 2007 | Associated Press

UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

KUSI just showed one of their reporters up on Del Dios Highway, by Lake Hodges. Unbelievable footage!

A few sections of of Northeast CV have been evacuated...those communities closest to Mt. Miguel. Bella Lago, and The Woods at Eastlake. Poss portions of San Miguel Ranch. Sunnyside section of Bonita, southeast section of Spring Valley. ChulaVista runs, from east to the ocean, a span of about 12 miles (just guestimating--i is five miles to the east of us where there are evacuations, and it is about 7 miles from here to the ocean. Maybe a little more.

I don't know about Mira Mesa, though another coworker llives in Mira Mesa, right on the edge of Rancho penasquitos, and they were preparing to evacuate last night.

He got out of there quickly—that fire just popped up right next to him, where it had been a bit further away.

I just called my sister to wish her a "happy" birthday. She was up all night along with her husband and daughter. At 5 AM they went over to my mom's house to make sure she was dressed and ready to go as the fire worked its way around Mt. Miguel. Her primary concern now is that the Santa Ana will end and shift the winds from the west. That would drive the fire right over her area.

More evacuations and new fires

As temperatures and winds again rise, officials say containment of major blazes is days away at the earliest. An estimated 1,000 homes have been lost in San Diego County.

Thanks...That’s the same I got...It doesn’t really say if it’s closed at the bottom of the hill...

Have family in a motor home at a park at the bottom, not far from Highland....

They bailed out yesterday morning, from the Crestline area, but were not real close to the arrowhead fire...Now they are stuck, sitting at a park...Possibly wilderness park at the bottom of the hill.

I would have never evacuated if I were them...Of course it was their call...But now I don’t think they can get back up and will probably be stuck for who knows how long.

Thanks.

It happened so quickly. There sure seemed to be a lot of small fires along that road that they were going to have to use to get out of the area.

There sure is a lot of conflicting info about what the winds are doing — I guess that’s the nature of the Santa Anas and depends on exact location.

KUSI 9: 325000 (three hundred twenty five thousand) homes have been evacuated. If you multiply that by a minimm of 2 people per househould, we are looking at about 3/4 of a million people evacuated.....probably closer to a million + people.

Actually, we’re trying to contact them again via cell, no answer right now...We’re going to see if they want to come to our home instead of sitting at that park.
