The World's Smallest Violin (Desperate liberal needs Freeper advice)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | October 26, 2007 | James Taranto

Think you've got problems? Let Ken Ilgunas offer you some perspective. Ken's got problems, and the Buffalo News has generously offered him space to tell the world about them:

I am 24, live with my parents, can't find work and am floundering in a sea of debt five figures high. I think of myself as ambitious, independent and hardworking. Now I'm dependent, unemployed and sleeping under the same Super Mario ceiling fan that I did when I was 7.

How did this happen? I did what every upstanding citizen is supposed to do. I went to college. . . .Upon graduating, I was helplessly launched headfirst into the "real world," equipped with a degree in history and $32,000 in student loans. Before ricocheting back home, I would learn two important lessons: 1) There are no well-paying--let alone paying--jobs for history majors. 2) The real world is really tough.

At one point, Ken was so "desperate" that he even considered working for a bank or an insurance company!

"I had hit an all-time low. Could I surrender my soul for health coverage and a steady income? Could I sacrifice my ideals by falling into line?"

Our hero stood firm.

Assclown was helpless long before he graduated .. and in order to be launched "headfirst" into anything the first thing he'll need to do is extract his cranium for where he currently has it lodged.

Where has Ken been? I graduated with my BA in 1970, having gone back after a 15 year break. Advisors told me NOT to major in history, my first love, because jobs were few and in HS and below, coaches get those jobs. The coaches have to teach one or more classes, and for some reason most are (qualified?-I doubt it) to teach history. My second choice was also doubtful--English. However, I took a double in Eng. and hy, and sure enough, no history jobs. Did get offered several Eng.

My question is--why is Ken's integrity not compromised by being supported by others--oh, yeah, forgot--he's a lib, so spending other people's money is o.k.--even a natural state.vaudine

Hey Ken, My son went to college and was indoctrinated like many of you are anymore. I guess some of my conservative principles got through to my son. He took out loans and all and has worked to pay them back.

I hate my son’s politics, but at least he has been responsible for paying his loans back.

And guess what? He is successful. Ken, you are the worst of the worst. Translation? You are a pathetic loser.

You are a pathetic little lib who thinks the world owes him because he went to college.

Guess what, Ken, you are an idiot.

>> Bottom line, you make your own opportunities, degree or none.

Agreed. Some educational backgrounds help more than others ... but, ultimately, you can succeed at pretty much anything.

He was talking to art majors, all of whom believed they’re the next Picasso, waiting to be discovered. I thought it was a good dose of reality.

I used to councel a kid to take a job at McDonalds to get a start at working. Had a Girlfriend that would have married him and a son with her.

He was too proud.

Blared out rap music (yea rap isn’t music) with his kid in the crib in the same room.

In and out of San Quentin, now 10 years later he has awakened

His Girlfriend (well ex) married an upstanding guy in the Navy and moved to San Diego.

The spoiled brats of the world can reach very advanced ages and still believe that everyone but them gets to do a job they love. They need to learn to love the job they can get.

My cousin was like that. Couldn’t hold a job for more than a year at a time before it just wasn’t “fun” anymore. Even though he had a wife and child to support, he could not embrace the idea that life sometimes requires some small sacrifices to meet your obligations.

Ken needs to look forward in order to move forward at a reasonable pace rather than insisting on using the rear view mirror (history) exclusively.

Oh for pity’s sake, what an unbelievable baby. By the time I was 24, I had been in the military for 6 years, held a Civil Service job based on that military position for 5 years, been married for 4 years and owned a house. My husband had graduated with an Associate’s Degree, all paid for and he also worked full-time.

It never occurred to us to fall back on our parents, not that they would have allowed it!!!

Integrity means taking responsibility for yourself and your obligations, not foisting them off on your parents or society at large. He needs a dictionary to help him figure out the true meaning of the word.

Should be 18 and out the door -
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The mere fact of his living with his parents is not the killer. I lived with mine for four years after military service, the difference is I was helping my parents, not the other way around. It used to be common for young people to stay at home until marriage but they didn’t expect their parents to support them, they went to work, helped out at home and they got married by 22 or so in most cases. I was considered strange because I stayed single until 28 but I never mooched off my parents and I moved out at 25 to go to a new job two hours away from them. It was a differnt world then.

I applaud him. Less competition for the motivated among us. As long as he’s not on the gov’ment teet, he should go on with his bad self.

Lets assume he finds employment equal to his qualifications.

Do you really want to eat a burger this guy had access to outside of your view?

My niece is a classy student who also waits tables at an expensive restaurant and makes more money than I do. She pays her way full time and is a beauty too.
