Christian parents: Stop trusting Harry Potter
wnd ^ | October 24, 2007 | Linda Harvey

A major character in the Harry Potter series is supposedly "gay," revealed author J.K. Rowling in a recent Carnegie Hall appearance. At the risk of giving the Potter books more publicity, which may be exactly what the author wants, I cannot resist the opportunity to comment. Actually, pardon me while I scream at the top of my lungs, just a little.

Here's my scream: "The Harry Potter books and movies are harmful to kids!"

For years now, some of us have been decrying the Harry Potter tales, saying they were not for children. They dishonor God, they glamorize sorcery, and the spirit surrounding the series is dark, sinister and anti-Christian. Teaching children positively about wizardry and witchcraft ought to have tipped off most believers, but no – there were those who went out of their way to criticize those of us who were concerned, saying we were overreacting, that it was just harmless fun. These were just lessons in "good" and evil, with Harry, of course, being "good." So what does one do now that millions of children are totally devoted to Harry and the characters? Rowling is a master manipulator. The affiliations have taken hold. No matter how you try to shield kids, they are sure to learn online or at school or somewhere that the admired headmaster of the Hogwart's school, professor Dumbledore, has been pronounced "gay" after the series is complete. What does a true Christian parent do with that information?

I'm not really a fan of Harry Potter, but I doubt JK Rowling is much concerned about getting publicity - those books are already some of the most famous ever written.

Information I really didn't need to know.

But this article is a MAJOR overreaction.

Oh, geez.

Not every piece of fiction out there has to be written with the intent of advocating religion. Nor should every piece of fiction out there be viewed through that lens.

Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the rumor is an our right fabrication designed to drum up anti-Potter sentiment.

I also wouldn't be surprised if it is true. Wouldn't want to discriminate by leaving out a minority group.

Dumbledore is not gay in the books. Dumbledore is not a real person but only exists as a character in the books/movies. If he's not gay there, he's not gay. If the author wants, now, to make him gay, she can write another book.

In my current profession, I work with a lot of kids and their parents. I wasn't too bothered by the news, but the reactions I've gotten from my clients have been decidedly negative. Anywhere from disappointment to a desire not to have anything to do with the franchise.

I do find it lamentable that a series of books that was so well received and scandal-free ended up being used by the author to further an agenda after all of the books were written, bought, and read. It does strike me as a betrayal of trust between writer and reader - the old "bait and switch".

Better would have been to keep her mouth shut and just let people debate. That's worked just fine for over a hundred years with Sherlock Holmes' sexuality.

I thought that perhaps they where referring to change in the plot with an unwritten book. I don't stay on top of them, but I know there are several, and I don't know if all of them have been published.

Next, we’ll learn that one of the Potter characters is a Republican.

That will be really scary. /s/

In one sentence, Rowling changed my opinion of her from fairly creative author to genuine twit.

Books are all published, Dumbledore dies.

I would not be surprised if it was a lie, look what happened to Rush, lies spread like wild fire.

Anyway, I'll take it as true. With that, I still think it's stupid. If anything, if it is true, she will be alienating more people than she attracts. Not much of a publicity stunt IMO. Thats why my reaction was it's a smear attempt.

Well. There she is.

This is so SNL "church lady". I'd blow my brains out just sitting next to her somewhere.
