Grand Island, Neb. (AP) -- Thousands of children whose parents are arrested in immigration raids in the U.S. face mental health issues including post-traumatic stress disorder, separation anxiety and depression, according to a new study released Wednesday by the Urban Institute.
A child is left without at least one parent for every two adults detained in workplace raids, the study said, and most of those children are citizens or legal immigrants.
"Those children were born in America, and we forgot about their rights during the raids, because they were left parentless," said Steve Joel, superintendent of Grand Island Public Schools, which encouraged parents to keep their children in school following a December raid at the Swift & Co. meatpacking plant.
The study was commissioned by The National Council of La Raza, a Washington-based Hispanic civil rights organization.
Researchers visited Grand Island and Greeley, Colorado, two of six sites where Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents conducted raids at Swift & Co. meatpacking plants that resulted in about 1,300 arrests. The immigrants arrested were mostly from Mexico and Guatemala.
Researchers also visited New Bedford, Massachusetts, where more than 360 workers were arrested at Michael Bianco Inc., a factory that makes equipment and apparel for the U.S. military.

I think we should stop arresting parents for anything then, because I think it’s stressful on them. The kids of a drug dealer or burgler or murderer all probably feel bad and have stress when their parent is arrested and goes to jail.
susie
Shall I continue?
These bleeding heart, assholes that write these stories need to have just one bad experience with these ILLEGAL Aliens. Just one. They would be crying like little girls if any of this happened to them.
Exactly.
Once again the parents who put these kids through this escape being held responsible. What is it these days that no one is accountable for their actions and the consequences of such actions. If the kids are traumatized then the parents are the reason, mot the law enforcement officers or the laws that the parents should have obeyed to begin with.
For who are in the dark about this group, La Raza translates as The Race.
Think Mexican 'super race.'
Yeah, I see 'em standing around the street like real frickin' heros.
Their 'super race' urinates behind the Stop-N-Go.
A school superintendent should know better than to get in to the middle of a political firestorm.
Unless the school board is really behind him on this he may be looking for a job when his contract is up.
Then again if the school board backs him and the community is more sensible the school board members may have more evenings free for pinochle or bowling in the future.
Not to mention the fact that the companies mentioned seem to have no fear with respect to employing illegals; I truly believe that people who employ these workers should face jail time. If enforced vigorously, a great part of the incentive would be removed.
Oh sure catch and release has worked so well in the past for illegals hasnt it. They all ways show up for their deportation hearings as promised.
They all ways show up for their deportation hearings as promised.
"The kids are still here, but they are still suffering," Rollins said. "(Parents) don't know what they're going to do with those kids."
Then I guess La Raza should spend some of their money in Mexico and Guatemala telling parents not to come to the US because their children will be harmed when they get deported.
Personally I think substantial fines would be sufficient say $500 to 1000 per day per illegal worker. If a business owner is going to put his business in hock for years or have to sell if to pay fines if he gets caught he will think twice.
Perhaps jail for repeat offenders.
The reason I am not in favor of jail for first offenders is because I dont want to close these businesses I just want them to obey the law.
Oh no, PLEASE don’t separate your familias!
Go back to the old country with mama and papa.
Even the most heinous of criminals manage to pop out offspring...it is sheer stupidity to think that law enforcement should come to a grinding halt because someone can hold up a crying child....
No Study Needed: America Hurt by Illegal Immigration
A self-defined racist organization conducts a "study" and the AP laps it up.
That means nothing if their parents were foreign nationals trespassing here unlawfully. The 14th Amendment is clear--deport them all, parents and children all.
The AP can cry us a river....they are pathetic.
My “Give-a-rat’s-a$$” is busted.
Right now, we got a lot of liberals angry in Central Texas, because some contracts were just renewed concerning a detention center (for non-Mexican illegals) where we lockup whole families, including little kids. They are pulling this crap about “how can you lock up little kids and infants”, and they have unfortunately brainwashed some of the religious groups in the area (going for the whole “What Would Jesus Do” angle probably). The fact is, those kids and their families are criminals, and they should be treated as such.

So what? They aren’t Americans, they don’t belong here and its not our problem.
I’m sick of these elitist liberal pseudointellectuals injecting non-relevant data into the discussion of how to eliminate invaders who violate our borders and how to punish those Americans who encourage and aid and abet them.
