Bratton Endorses Spitzer Driver’s License Plan (Giuliani wants Bratton as Homeland/Security/Sec)
NY TIMES ^ | October 22, 2007 | Sewell Chan

Posted on 11/10/2007 1:35:05 PM PST by Liz

EXCERPT William J. Bratton, former NYC police commissioner under Mayor Giuliani endorsed Gov Spitzer's plan to license illegals. Chief Bratton was NYC police commissioner from 1994-96, during the first term of Mayor Giuliani, but the two men famously feuded, with Giuliani resentful that Mr. Bratton — a pioneer of the city’s Compstat program — was getting credit for the city’s reduction in crime.

In March 2007, Giuliani began trying to mend fences with Bratton and met privately; afterward, Mr. Bratton said he “enjoyed” the tête-à-tête.

In May 2007, the two men met in Los Angeles.

In a statement released by Spitzer’s office, Chief Bratton said: As former Commissioner of the New York City Police Department and now Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (since 2002), I support efforts that have the potential to solve crimes and improve traffic safety. That’s why I backed legislation in California that would give undocumented immigrants the ability to get a driver’s license once they have provided proof of their identification. It is my belief that by doing that you would reduce the number of hit and runs and increase the number of insured motorists on the road. We would also now have undocumented immigrants’ identifying information on record such as photographs and addresses which could prove helpful in the fight against crime and terrorism.

RUDY: I'D TAP MY OLD FOE BRATTON
By DAVID K. LI, NY POST
August 13, 2007

EXCERPT GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani floated an extraordinary olive branch to bitter rival William Bratton, hinting he'd consider his estranged former top cop for a high federal post.

In an interview in this week's New Yorker magazine, Giuliani was asked whom he'd tap for Homeland Security secretary if elected to the White House. He laughed and told the magazine whom he wouldn't tap. ".....you need a Bernie Kerik without the background problems that Bernie Kerik had," Giuliani said of his ethics-challenged former police commissioner and close friend.

The former mayor lavished praise on his first police commissioner, Bratton, the city's top cop from 1994-96..... Giuliani is largely blamed for forcing Bratton, now LA police chief, out of office in an ugly battle of egos. "But you sort of look back on some of the things and say that was an extraordinarily productive relationship," Giuliani told the magazine. Now that I look back on it, I really appreciate the (Bratton) relationship."

It's certain that Giuliani won't be tapping Kerik for any job in his potential Cabinet. Kerik, NY's top cop from 2000 to 2001 and a close friend of Giuliani's, was briefly nominated for Homeland Security's top post by President Bush. Kerik withdrew, claiming his employment of an illegal nanny would make his confirmation too difficult. It soon emerged that Kerik had a flood of ethics allegations that were much more serious.

Proof of their identification would've been a note signed by their travel agent coyote.

Great! Two gun-grabbing, liberal elitists for the price of one. Does Giuliani think we don’t know who Bratton is?

As Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton said, “Assault weapons are designed to be easily concealed and kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible.”

Assault weapons easily concealed? The guy is a disingenuous, totalitarian boot-licker.

Thanks for posting this.

I figured that Giuliani was still, at heart, the same guy that made New York a ‘sanctuary’ city, and that his recent tough talk about illegal immigration was just a sham.

I'm sorry but I am not a Guliani fan but it is simply unfair to "indict" Guliani by taking someone else's quote and essentially stating that Guliani agrees with the statement because he has said that Bratton would be a potential Homeland Security nominee if Guliani was elected.

I'll wait to see Guliani's answer if he is asked by the press or in the next debate whether he agrees with Bratton's position.

Could we “indict” a candidate that said this personally?

Romney:
“These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense,” he was quoted as saying. “They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.”

Support for gun control,
Support for homosexuals and the homosexual agenda,
Support for big intrusive govt.,
I can go on, but suffice it to say I will not support RINO Rudy.

It speaks volumes not only about Giuliani's political "convictions", but also reveals how he views the "conservative base". To Rudy, conservatives are just redneck rubes from Nascar flyover country who are too stupid to tie their shoes, are easily fooled, and are only worth minimal effort pandering to (because we are battered-wife chumps who will fall in line anyway like good little sheep when the time comes). A few nice gestures ought to be enough - he'll talk about how he respects some liberal bastardization of the 2nd Amendment, about how he will elect "strict constructionist judges" (apparently like his model justice, Ruth Bader Ginsberg). All while giving the wink-wink to fellow left-wingers - "don't worry, this is all show for those stupid mouthbreathers".

Inner thoughts of Giuliani: "When I win the Republican nomination, those bluffing, huffing conservatives will vote for me out of fear of Hillary and 9/11. I got them all in the bag - what are they going to do, vote third party? Hahahaha!"

I actually read Billy Bratton’s book back in ‘99.

I was impressed back then but have been bitterly disappointed in the years since.

Ever since he became LAPD chief he has sold out completely and has now become the very sort of politician-in-uniform for whom he used to have utter contempt.

Mitt has always been a conservative. He just did that to get elected to a liberal state.

Jeeshe!
