Madrid - Former Spanish chief of state José Maria Aznar spoke with the King of Spain and with current prime minister Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero this afternoon to thank them for the support they expressed for him in the Iberoamerican meeting yesterday in Santiago de Chile after Aznar was criticized by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

The conversation with Zapatero was brief, just 10 minutes, and took place after Zapatero placed a floral offering at the memorial to victims of the military dictatorship in Argentina...government sources have confirmed Zapatero responded to Aznar, saying, "I acted according to my principles and for the respect any person who is chosen democratically by the citizens for the presidency of our country deserves."

The King and the head of the Spanish government confronted the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, at the Latin American summit, at which the monarch told Chavez, "Why do not shut up," in response to Chavez' ex- criticism of Aznar. The incident occured during the final meeting of the summit, and was preceded by another incident in which the president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, was critical of the Spanish electric company Fenosa Union, that motivated the King to leave the meeting in protest of the attacks on Spain.

El Rey Don Juan Carlos is a truly great man. And not just for this episode, but in his consistent defense of democracy. But, por fin, someone told Chavez what he has so badly needed to be told. If you speak Spanish, there is a great blog thread on this at: http://www.noticierodigital.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=285217

You can see the King tell Chavez to shut up here on YouTube.

Runs 57 seconds.

"Say what you want but King Juan Carlos has some real stones. "

And he demonstrated it 26 years ago when he went on Spanish TV and said there wouldn't be any military coups while he's the King.

The Spanish still get teary-eyed remembering that day.

I get teary-eyed remembering that day. I was in Madrid at the time and it was, to say the least, tense. The King was magnificent.

I do remember that he stood in their legislature and faced down some potential revolutionaries.
