Thompson to Be Endorsed by Right to Life Nov 12 02:18 PM US/Eastern By LIZ SIDOTI Associated Press Writer INDIANOLA, Iowa (AP) - Fred Thompson will be endorsed for president by the National Right to Life Committee, Republicans say.

The endorsement by the prominent anti-abortion group could give a boost to the campaign of the Republican former Tennessee senator, who has seen his poll numbers drop in recent weeks and has failed to become the consensus candidate for conservatives.

The decision was disclosed Monday by two Republicans who spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of the announcement that was expected Tuesday.

Thompson boasts a 100 percent voting record in opposing abortion but has faced criticism from some conservatives for what they consider conflicting statements in the past.

Well that's huge. Also surprising. While I don't think Thompson has the right reasons for what he does on the pro-life front, his record is squeaky clean.

I'm still not voting for him. I'm rather surprised that Right To Life would go the compromise route, passing over Hunter. Timing is very odd as well, coming right on the heals of his statement that he does not support the Republican platform calling for a Life Amendment. Guess what part of the Republican platform is now toast courtesy of RTL?

I guess the big names and big groups and party powerful do all the choosing for the rest of us.

Go Fred, Go!

This is great for him. Picking up this endorsement will surely help. He’s been picking up the pace lately. Can’t wait to punch the ballot for him!

National Right to Life has been fighting the good fight for a long time. Maybe we should give them the benefit of the doubt. Might be interesting to see the text of the endorsement. Perhaps they aren’t so stupid as to sell out the pro-life cause.

Surely you meant Huckabee. Hunter has always been strongly against amnesty to the best of my knowledge. But Hunter would be an awesome VP.

I never said they were selling out the pro-life cause. I said this is a compromise endorsement. I believe this endorsement will result in the removal of the Life Amendment section of the Republican platform. Everyone now knows RTL is willing to compromise on that. Sometimes timing alone can be your undoing.

Great news!

Looks like some high profile conservatives are paying attention after all. Fred`s message is getting out, just not to enough people.

Fred`s slipping poll numbers should be a wake up call to his entire campaign team. Time to turn it up a couple notches. Use the media and spread Fred`s message wide and far. Political propaganda works.

Go Fred go!

Oh yeah....what about campaign finance reform? Did that not factor into their little decision making process when they looked over his past record?

Is a constitutional amendment the best way to end abortions? It is certainly an open question. Many sincere pro-lifer’s (including me) think that sending the issue back to the states is the best way to end abortions. Differences of opinion make the world go around.

“I guess the big names and big groups and party powerful do all the choosing for the rest of us.”

No, we all get to choose for ourselves. But anyone has the right to try to influence others, just as you did with your post. What is amusing is the number of posters (present company perhaps excepted) who think anyone cares how they will or will not vote. No one is going to hold another voter hostage by insisting they will stay home, vote third party, or jump off a bridge if (insert preferred hated candidate here) wins the nomination.

I wonder why so many seem consumed with those they won’t support, but fewer seem interested in supporting someone. If they answer that there is no one to support, they fall into that 4-5% of voters who are always out there, but never matter since they always vote third party, stay home, or jump off bridges. There are several Republican candidates much superior to any alternative the Dems offer.

Sorry: his performance with Tim russert in which he reiterated all the PRO ABORTION CANARDS SUCH AS ARRESTING GIRLS FOR HAVING ABORTIONS did it for me. All the lies that he repeated against pro lifers.

Fred clarified his remarks with Russert that same week in South Carolina. He does support the HLA and Republican platform on that:

At a campaign stop in South Carolina, Thompson indicated that he had given Russert's question more thought and sought to clarify his position. "I can run on the Republican Platform. ... I have a different priority in terms of how to achieve the same objective. I think Roe v. Wade should be changed with good judges following the law. … [E]ven when Republicans had control of the Senate, we could not move that (constitutional amendment) forward."

There is also additional information at the thread on this same subject highlighted at post 2 above.
