The Club for Growth opposes Congressman Hunter
The Club for Growth ^ | October 30, 2006 | Andrew Roth

Posted on 11/24/2007 6:20:54 PM PST by Kurt Evans

Since Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) is apparently going to explore the possibility of running for president in 2008, I thought I'd dig up some of his roll call votes. Like most Republicans, he's strong on tax cuts, but he's been part of the big government spending spree of the last 6 years. He also has a protectionist streak in him. Here are some of the more troubling votes:

NO on NAFTA

YES on No Child Left Behind

YES on Sarbanes-Oxley

YES on the 2003 Medicare Drug Benefit

NO on CAFTA

YES on 2005 Highway Bill

YES on the 527 bill (like most Republicans, he flip-flopped, having first voted NO on McCain-Feingold)

Hunter also went 0 for 19 on the Flake anti-pork amendments.

Despite being a member of the Republican Study Committee, Hunter frequently votes NO on their fiscally conservative annual budgets (2006, 2005, 2003...)

We gave him a 49% on the 2005 Club for Growth scorecard. That places him 187th within the House GOP conference, out of roughly 230 members.

National Taxpayers Union shows a more telling trend. He was strong in the early 1990s, getting "B's" and one "A", but as time went by, like most politicians, his score dropped. For the past few years, he's been getting "C's".

nobody can touch mccain on pork. and of course that by itself won’t make me vote for him.

fred isn’t perfect but he is clearly the all around winner and yet people think Hunter is this super perfect conservative when that is clearly not the case...and he’s also very low in the polls.
So I don’t get it. Why help Rudy win by splitting the vote for someone who is a big spender?

Exactly. Which, is why I don’t understand why he wouldn’t be the most electable guy for middle America especially. The union and blue dog dems should be jumping ship to support him over any idiot dem.

Remember when Republican used to mean conservative? Or at least we thought so. That seems like a fond childhood memory now - like believing in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy.

And what is your point? You posted the link before—I asked if it meant you are supporting Ron Paul. Not sure why you are posting it again.

Are you trying to compare votes of Republican congresscritters under a Bush administration to those under a Clinton administration? The comparison is not valid. Are you trying to look only at the dollar values in the far right column? If so, Bill Richardson looks great! This is a bogus chart, IMO—totally meaningless as a comparison of anything.

Well I doubt that, why give up a point or two, that would be kinda stupid wouldn't it?

Now if you want I can see if Fred is willing to loan an extra point so we can double up Hunters, maybe even get him showing up on Rasmussen or the like...

NTU penalizes Hunter for voting for funding the War on Terrorism. Are you from Code Pink? Is this another underhanded anti-war movement?

fred isn’t perfect but he is clearly the all around winner

Clearly? Winner of what? I like Fred personally, but I'm disappointed at past statements (eg. immigration) and many things in his record (CFR, Global Warming, Pork, Trade, China, etc).

...and yet people think Hunter is this super perfect conservative when that is clearly not the case...and he’s also very low in the polls.

I don't think he's perfect but I do agree with him on many more issues than all of the other candidates.

So I don’t get it. Why help Rudy win by splitting the vote for someone who is a big spender?

As far as I can see by the record, Fred is a bigger spender than Hunter. I haven't yet decided who I will vote for.

You’re right, in a general election between Hillary and Duncan Hunter, Hunter would win in a landslide. It would not be a squeaker election like we will have if we run one of the “top tier” moderates.

Economically? Paul is hardly talking economics. All he’s talking about is surrender in Iraq and how terrorism is all our fault.

There was a time, though, when Paul was very good on economic matters. Why....you don’t support limited government?

Hank
