Some research reveals that he was born Paul Kenyatta Laws - which would indicate that he is an African-American born to at least one black militant parent in the 1960s.

He apparently had a previous criminal record before converting to Islam in 1989, so it looks like he is a prison convert.

Paul was born Paul Kenyatta Laws. He legally changed his name to Abdulmalek Kenyatta in 1989, then to Christopher Paul in 1994, according to the indictment.

This would be consistent with an attempt to better blend in and attract less attention while traveling. I hope the feds have a system in place to look closely at people who change their names to Arabic sounding names only to change them back. It should be a major red flag, possibly innocent but worth taking a look at.
