:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Calculating the Risks in Pakistan

A small group of U.S. military experts and intelligence officials convened in Washington for a classified war game last year, exploring strategies for securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal if the country's political institutions and military safeguards began to fall apart.

The secret exercise — conducted without official sponsorship from any government agency, apparently due to the sensitivity of its subject — was one of several such games the U.S. government has conducted in recent years examining various options and scenarios for Pakistan's nuclear weapons: How many troops might be required for a military intervention in Pakistan? Could Pakistani nuclear bunkers be isolated by saturating the surrounding areas with tens of thousands of high-powered mines, dropped from the air and packed with anti-tank and anti-personnel munitions? Or might such a move only worsen the security of Pakistan's arsenal?

“Muslim prisoners group ‘is front for banned cleric’”

LONDON:

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “But the Standard has discovered Captive Support is headed by Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohamed, a preacher in exile in Lebanon. He was banned from returning to Britain after the 7 July attacks on London in 2005. Known as the Tottenham Ayatollah, he once called the 9/11 hijackers “magnificent” and declared the 7/7 bombers had gone to paradise.

Bakri sent a message to the conference via a video link from his home in Tripoli. The group consists mainly of former members of Al-Muhajiroun, al-Ghurabaa and the Saved Sect, now all banned.

Bakri has previously headed these groups and several of their members are in jail for terror-related offences.

“French Jewish group denounces anti-Semitic aggression in Paris”
EJP Updated: 19/Dec/2007 16:38

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “PARIS (EJP)-—The French National Bureau of Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism has denounced a reported violent anti-Semitic aggression last Saturday in the 10th district of Paris.

Raymond. A, a 17-year-old Jewish man, who wears a skullcap, was waiting on Shabbat for someone to open the door of the building where he lives, on the rue Albert Camus, when around twenty young people described as being of North African and Black origin attacked him violently at the face and the body after pronouncing his name.

One of the aggressors, Raymond reported, was a raid-haired man who did not cease swearing on the Koran while beating his victim.

Raymond was saved by a Jewish neighbor who went out from his home at the same time.

“He saved my life,” the young man said.”

Italy Imam guilty of terror charges

An Islamic cleric who preaches at a mosque in Milan has been convicted on terror charges by an Italian court.

Abu Imad was found guilty - along with 10 other men - of being part of a group that encouraged jihad and sought to recruit potential suicide bombers.

But the imam was handed one of the more lenient sentences - three years and eight months - after prosecutors said he posed no current security threat.

America will soon be annihilated

"The people who made our nation proud by carrying out the 9/11 martyrdom operations in Washington and New York were the 19 best people of our nation. All the martyrs in Afghanistan, Chechnya, Iraq, Palestine, and elsewhere should be seen as role models.

"Allah willing, we will reach America. The men of this nation will reach America. The goal of this campaign is not only Kabul, Kandahar, or Baghdad. The eyes of the nation of Muhammad are set on Washington, London, Moscow, Paris, Delhi, Beijing, and other countries. This is our goal and, Allah willing, we will get there."

France holds 5 terror suspects
Thu Dec 20, 2007

PARIS - French authorities held five men suspected of links to the al-Qaida branch behind a deadly bombing at U.N. offices in Algeria last week, a police official said Thursday.

The men, who are suspected of providing logistical support to al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa, were rounded up for questioning Tuesday in the Paris area and near the Normandy city of Rouen. Al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa claimed responsibility for twin truck bombings of the U.N. offices and an Algerian government building Dec. 11 that killed at least 37 people, including 17 U.N. staff members.

Three other men who were also detained Tuesday have been released, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. The five men still in custody were being held at the headquarters of the DST counterintelligence service, the official said. The DST's operation was based on a request from an anti-terrorism judge who suspected the men of providing computers and telecommunications material to the Algerian terror group.

Police seized computers as they searched the men's homes, the official said. The suspects were North African and French. Le Figaro newspaper reported that the men, all in their 30s, had police records and had been under surveillance for months.

Moroccan charged with helping al-Qaida
Thu Dec 20, 2007

BERLIN - Prosecutors said Thursday that they have filed terrorism charges against a Moroccan man accused of helping recruit foreign fighters for al-Qaida in Iraq. The man, identified only as 25-year-old Abdelali M., was arrested in Sweden in March and handed over to Germany in May.

Federal prosecutors said they filed charges against him Nov. 18, accusing him of helping found a terrorist organization abroad and of supporting al-Qaida in Iraq by helping recruit Islamic militants and smuggling them to Iraq. Prosecutors alleged he was an accomplice of a German-Moroccan dual citizen, identified only as Redouane E.H., who went on trial in Germany in July on similar charges.

They said that, between June and July 2006, he was involved in recruiting and then smuggling into Iraq three militants — one each from Morocco, Egypt and Said Arabia. At the same time, they said, the accused helped found a terrorist group in Sudan whose aim was to "build up a front ... against the crusaders" and wage holy war.

Prosecutors said that the group — allegedly set up by Redouane E.H. and four others — planned to set up a terrorist training camp in Sudan, and that the Moroccan pledged to provide funds and help recruit fighters for it. There was no immediate word on when a trial might begin.

Judge upholds Muslim scholar's US entry ban

A U.S. federal judge on Thursday upheld a government decision to refuse a prominent Swiss Muslim entry into the United States, saying the question of denying visas was best left to the authorities.

The United States had revoked the visa of Tariq Ramadan, an academic at Britain's Oxford University and a vocal critic of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and its support of Israel.

The State Department initially gave no reason, but later said Ramadan had been barred under a provision of the USA Patriot Act that bars anyone who endorses terrorism.

Iranian cleric says non-conforming women should be put to death

A top Muslim cleric in Iran says Iranian women who do not wear the hijab or Muslim headscarf should be put to death.

The Adnkronos Press Agency says Hojatolislam Gholam Reza Hassani says — "Women who do not respect the hijab and their husbands deserve to die. I do not understand how these women who do not respect the hijab, 28 years after the birth of the Islamic Republic, are still alive. These women and their husbands and their fathers must die."

Group slamming Savage has ties to radical Muslims

The Hate Hurts America Interfaith and Community Coalition (HHA), headed by CAIR-Orlando Executive Director Sabiha Khan, sprang into the public spotlight recently by pushing for a boycott of radio shock jock Michael Savage by his sponsors.

Formed in the wake of comments by Savage on his nationally syndicated “Savage Nation” radio program that were critical of Muslims and terror apologists at CAIR, the HHA called upon companies “to withdraw their advertisements from the program as a concrete demonstration of support for the American traditions of religious and cultural tolerance and mutual respect.”

The objective of such action, according to the organization’s Web site, is to prevent hate-filled words from entering public discourse because they “can and do lead to violent actions.”

But can Khan or a CAIR-connected coalition really qualify as a moral authority on this topic? While one may not condone what Savage said, Khan is certainly in no position to comment on deterring hate speech.

As spokeswoman for the Los Angeles chapter of CAIR from late 2001-06, Khan worked hand-in-hand with Hussam Ayloush, the chapter’s executive director, to defend hatemongers — most notably radical cleric Wagdy Ghoneim.

Ghoneim, a native of Egypt, came to the attention of immigration officials in North America and Europe as a result of his repeated calls for violent jihad against Jews, and active participation with terror-connected organizations.

“Palestine will not be liberated by speeches and peaceful means, but through jihad,” Ghoneim said at a 1997 Muslim Arab Youth Association conference. “The Jews are scared by the word ‘jihad’ ... We have to prepare ourselves for jihad against Jews and to liberate Aqsa Masjid. This is a must whether we accept it or not.”

“China taps into U.S. spy operations”
By Bill Gertz
December 21, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “China’s intelligence service gained access to a secret National Security Agency listening post in Hawaii through a Chinese-language translation service, according to U.S. intelligence officials.

The spy penetration was discovered several years ago as part of a major counterintelligence probe by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) that revealed an extensive program by China’s spy service to steal codes and other electronic intelligence secrets, and to recruit military and civilian personnel with access to them.”
