Times defends hiring conservative Kristol By: Michael Calderone December 29, 2007 04:21 PM EST
The New York Times hiring of Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol to write for its op-ed page caused a frenzy in the liberal blogosphere Friday night, with threats of canceling subscriptions and claims that the Gray Lady had been hijacked by neo-cons
But Times editorial page editor, Andy Rosenthal, sees things differently.
Rosenthal told Politico shortly after the official announcement Saturday that he fails to understand this weird fear of opposing views.
The idea that The New York Times is giving voice to a guy who is a serious, respected conservative intellectualand somehow thats a bad thing, Rosenthal added. How intolerant is that?
Kristol, whose strident support of President Bush and the war in Iraq remains a source of consternation among liberals, took pride in the reaction on the Huffington Post, where the news first broke.
I was flattered watching blogosphere heads explode, Kristol told Politico. It was kind of amusing.
Unlike The Times stable of bi-weekly columnistsincluding Maureen Dowd and fellow Standard alum David BrooksKristol will write only once a week, with his first column set for Jan. 7.
Rosenthal said that he has known Kristol since Rosenthals days as a Times White House correspondent and the conservative writer was Vice President Dan Quayles chief of staff.
Offering Kristol a one-year contract made sense, Rosenthal said, given the increased interest in the 2008 election. But Kristol also had to end his arrangement with Time magazine, where he had been writing column, albeit more irregularly.

Kristol a conservative?
That’s debatable.
What in comparison to say the Marxist Clintons? Or compared to Ronald Maximus?
Sounds like he’s the replacement for Saffire.
Bwahahaha! HILLARIOUS! NYT employing the eeeeevil Neocon villain (in the lib world) Kristol.
Uh, welcome to your liberal Democrat world, Andy. Now grow some stones and hire Ann Coulter.
New York Times trying to boost readership, no doubt!
Just one more forum for Kristol to rant about “yahoos” and “nativists” who can’t support the illegal alien invaders that clean his mansion and mow his grass.
How can he not understand it? It's the Slimes' publishing philosophy.
Bingo! Bottom line reality comes to the NYTs liberal politics.
I’m not really sure if there are many conservatives subscribing to NYT simply because Kristol column appears there. If they also hire other authors, like Ann Coulter, Victor Davis Hanson, and so on (all of them, not one or two), then perhaps it will make a difference.
Your exactly correct on that one
I couldn't have said it better. And I hope those outraged liberals DO cancel their subscriptions!
Thumbs up. 8^)
Kristol is a great guy IMHO, but he’s sleeping with the enemy here.
Hire Mark Steyn and watch your commie/lib reader's heads REALLY explode. I might even buy your rag a couple of times a month.
Duh. So Maureen writes a column once every two weeks, but Kristol writes only once a week?
I hope they don't use bi-sweet chocolate chips in their cookies.
Strident? Kristol? These simple f*-ers just can't help themselves can they.
Funny how Liberalism has come to stand for Intolerance, especially of opposing views--in the media, on the campus, on high-profile scientific questions.
