Home / Business Penalties to rise for shunning insurance State healthcare levy could exceed $900 Email|Print| Text size + By Jeffrey Krasner Globe Staff / January 1, 2008 Penalties for Massachusetts residents who can afford health insurance but do not purchase it in 2008 could quadruple compared with the maximum penalty in 2007, according to draft regulations released by the Department of Revenue yesterday.
more stories like thisThe maximum penalty for those who flout the law and do not buy health insurance would be $912 a year, compared to $219 in 2007.
The higher penalty is intended to get those who are on the fence to buy health insurance. For those wavering, it could make more sense to pay for insurance than to pay the penalty.

availability -> lack of availability
What state are you in?
I can't afford over $1,200 per month. I've been charging insurance premiums to my credit cards. My home is up for sale. I am being treated with radiation twice a day for cancer, so I can't afford to miss a payment.
I hope more and more Americans realize that nothing has robbed them of more FREEDOMS than what our current health care system has done. Maybe when they start to realize that millions of mothers work outside the home, who otherwise wouldn't, only because of a employer paid health care plan she needs for herself, spouse and children. Millions of husbands cannot change jobs because of availability and costs of adequate health care.
"Be all you can be", as long as they offer health care benefits!
I’m in Indiana

moonman.....if you lived in England or Canada....you would have the best Free healthcare in the world.....
of course if you are really ill or have a life threatening disease....you like all of those socialist patrons....Run to the US!!!!!
Years ago, and it still may be in effect, hospitals placed a surcharge of about 30% on the insured patients bill to cover those who were uninsured still provided health care.
“...and our military veterans ... it’s good enough for ME!”
Military veterans opt out as quick as they can...

The problem is simpler. The illegal aliens bring
in the diseases that America previously eradicated,
and use the ERs rather than the normal route.
The problem was that Romney and the present US Congress
continue to invite them all in for a free meal,
free medical care, free, free, free, but it is not free,
after all, is it?
I’m in Michigan and BCBS is very expensive. I have two kids, one in college and I have to pay additional for her now that she’s 19. I can’t get competitive rates with other companies because of a few “pre-exisiting conditions” that my wife has. It will cost me about 700/month for their best HSA. If I was able to go to Fortis or some other carrier, it would be around 400/mo. Besides my house, it’s my biggest expense.
A big part of equation
Find a country that has a system you like.
I've been around a little, now I know a little more about medicine thanks to the Uncle Sam. So may I ask you, "How long do you want to wait for a hip fracture to be fixed?" If your mom is in the ER and fell, how many days or weeks would you let her sit/lay in buck's traction till a doctor was allowed to fix her hip.
How long would you wait for a broken jaw to get "fixed"?
How long would you wait for CT/MRI of the head if you were over 59 and developed soft neuro findings, (slight vision disturbances, headaches, weakness and numbness to face)?
Funny how things change when you or your family is in the ER and wants to be fixed NOW!
My friend, go to England, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia and any other country , guess where the rich go for their cancer.... Mayo, Sloan-Kettering, MD Anderson.... not Cuba, not England, not Canada, not Sweden....where? The USA.
Mandating private insurance is one thing, socializing medicine is another.
The thing I love about the dems mouthing off about socialized medicine is that they'll never give an example of where it's worked anywhere in the world.
In our country the two REAL examples of socialized medicine is the VA and Indian Affairs department for medicine. You want the government to run medicine? Think TSA, Dept. of Education, Post Office, US Customs (border security), and the entire District of Columbia....bwahahahahahaha.
Good point
You Have Freep mail
However depending on your age, prior health history and habits (smoking, drinking, drugs.etc) you will be placed on a protocol list in socialized medicine.
Depending on the "stage" of your cancer the cost benefit ratio may allow you "hospice" care. Or you may be offered euthanasia in several countries.
Oh the really neat thing is that currently there are several countries (Netherlands) that are testing a system that allows the doctor to determine when to euthanize a patient without their consent.
Cool, huh?
That's what the "end point" is. You are a nameless face in a cost benefit ratio that will be mandated by the federal government. Now if little Chelsea needs a nose job or Teddy needs a new liver..... well they're important and by all means will go to the front of the line for their "free" medical care.... and raise our taxes to insure that EVERYBODY is covered.
just some covered better than others.... you see, some animals are "more equal" than others. Where do you think you'll fall.... ? In front of Teddy or behind Chelsea?
Like you I don’t know the answer, but I know it’s not going to benefit me or my doctor.
You are so right. The issue is extremely complicated. That’s the reason I want the most conservative person I can get in the WH. It’s impossible to predict with precision what a good solution to this problem would be, but I know in my heart if it’s going to work, it’s going to have to come from a free-market conservative. Like Fred.
$76 a month isn't going to buy any half-way decent health coverage even for one young person in any area of the country, much less in high-priced MA. My 28 year old self-employed nephew pays over $800 per month for medical insurance for his wife, child, and himself, and that's for a limited coverage policy with a high deductible.
The $912 fine by the state may get you off the hook for not buying insurance, but it can't be an answer to anyone's health insurance needs.
Ron Paul is looking beter all the time.....
