Finger Length Points To Arthritis Risk

Risk Higher If Ring Finger Longer

POSTED: 5:00 pm EST January 2, 2008

The ratio of the length of the ring and index fingers has been tied to athletic and sexual traits. Researchers now say it can also be an indicator of arthritis.

A team from the University of Nottingham found that people with ring fingers that are much longer than their index fingers had a greater chance of getting arthritis in the knee, especially in women.

For the study, they looked at more than 2,000 people who were considering joint replacements because of arthritis and more than 1,100 people with no symptoms. All were given X-rays of the knees, hips and hands.

People with shorter index fingers were twice as likely as others to have arthritis in some part of the knee.

The lead researcher said the evidence showed that finger ratios are a new risk factor for arthritis.

That’s neither of the fingers in the study. Duh.

Did they include the frequency of the individual inviting others to pull his/her finger?

Seriously though, my ring fingers are longer than the indexes and Arther Itus is a total bastard until the aspirin and Naproxin Sodium (Nuprin) kicks in. This began around age 35 (ten years ago), a young age to be afflicted by such a debilitating genetic disease. I’ve countered it through activity, stretching and such while shunning drugs but fear the continuing loss of flexibility means Arther is winning.

Can’t run anymore for more than a hundred yards...but always felt that running is for those who can get beyond my target range - which is still excellent (LOL). Still, we all want to be as mobile as possible as long as possible. This is especially relevant in an era when so many in grandparent age find themselves caring for their progeny’s offspring.

My ring fingers are longer than my indexes also. I have had off and on joint pain for maybe, 5 years. I’m 38 now. Nothing at all debilitating but I do think about what may be coming from time to time.

In the words of the famous old song we learned in elementary school:

Dem bones, Dem Bones, Dem Finger bones,
Index bone connected to the knee bone,
Ring bone connected to the other knee bone,
Middle finger bone connected to the dirty bone,
All ‘em bones cause arthritis...
Oh hear the word of the Lord..

(With apologies to my second grade teacher, Miss Parker).

I wonder what is considered too long.

My little fingers are very crooked. I wonder if that means something.

Start taking chondroitin and glucosamine. Costco has a good brand called Move Free. I lift weights a bit, am 60, and if I forget to take it, get really achy joints.

Give it a shot, betcha it helps....

Okay, much is a relative term.

My index finger is about a half inch shorter than my ring finger.

I am 46 and have no sign of arthritis in my knees.

Arthritis has a definite age component to it as well the article would have made a good deal more sense if it had mentioned an age correlation.

The article should say; people with ring fingers that are much longer than their index fingers had a greater chance of getting arthritis in the knee by age 50. for instance.

I don't know if this article's theory is correct but you are young enough to take advantage of over-the-counter joint supplements that may spare you a load of misery in the long run. I've been taking this Flex-Force supplement which seems to have at least arrested deterioration.

If I can't dance when the moment moves me life would be a chore. Rock on.

So what is it about sexual traits???????

Actually, everyone knows that's tied to shoe size not finger length.

Here’s a simple food experiment you might try: Eliminate all grains except organic rice from your diet for a period of 5 or six days. By grains, I mean, wheat (bread, pasta, etc.), corn (popcorn, corn oil, etc.), rye, barley, oats, etc. You could try them one or a few per experiment. If there is a particular grain that you eat on a regular basis, that would be the place to start.

Take Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin (one tab). Get it off the shelf at Wal-Mart. It doesn't seem to have any side effects- no one has reported any and millions of folks use it, some massively. It kept me walking for at least five years before knee replacement. It actually promotes replacement of lost fluid in the joints and retards deterioration in at least some kinds of arthritis. I have got half a dozen people started on it because I rave about it and only one of them did not get very noticeable improvement in their use of knees or elbows or fingers, even a neck. I always refused to do the cortisone shots because the doc said they actually only kill the pain and allow you to use the joint in a manner that hastens the degeneration. I got the second part of that info when I questioned the doctor about his recommendation. When I asked about the Gluco he said that well he coulldn't recommend it but I could read about it on the Web and good luck.

It's good stuff. I was taking 6 a day before my knee replacement, Then I stopped and my titanium knee just got better and better. Then my fingers started to hurt a little. I am back to 2 a day but my fingers are fine now. The pills are cheap.

Are you testing for celiac disease or for arthritis?

I just cut off my ring fingers at the last knuckle and my arthritis has gone away.

Or, maybe I just don’t notice it because I’m in so much damned pain!
