Mike Huckabee's New Deal: More God, More Government
Wall Street Journal ^ | January 4, 2008 | DAVID J. SANDERS

Posted on 01/04/2008 3:00:57 AM PST by LowCountryJoe

[Snip]...But one wonders whether his newfound supporters would really say that if they took a close look at his policies. With increasing frequency, Mr. Huckabee invokes his faith when advocating greater government involvement in just about every aspect of American life. In doing so, Mr. Huckabee has actually answered the prayers of the religious left.

[Snip]...Democrats have made some inroads with evangelical voters. A recent Pew poll showed that the percentage of Americans who see the party as friendly to religion has increased to 30% from 26% since 2006. But no one has articulated the message of the religious left more effectively than Mr. Huckabee.

In August, he told a group of Washington reporters that the application of his faith to politics must include concerns for the environment, poverty and hunger. "It can't just be about abortions and same-sex marriage," he said. "We can't ignore that there are kids every day in this country that literally don't have enough food and adequate drinking water in America."

Someone I'm beginning to trust even less than Huckabee...this FNC contributor, Frank Luntz. I've thought that his focus groups are packed by a particular brand of conservative and a full representation of the conservative spectrum is left wanting.

Also, if you haven't read this thread -- to include the whole two-paged article that's excerpted there -- you probably should.

Strategically, Huckabee is a fox in the henhouse low country, he turns attacks or disparaging of his record as of Gov into comparisons with Reagen’s record as CA Governor.

NH will be his firewall.

Frank Luntz is like Dick Morris. Both are over-hyped media darling posers convinced of their briliance while they push their personal agendas in the guise of “un-biased experts.”
If they were right as much as they are wrong they might fool more people but as yet they are only fooling fools.

I actually heard a fellow foodbank helper state: “The government should do more to feed the hungry” as we handed out boxes after boxes of staple foods. Finding contributions has never been a problem - finding space to store those contributions for distribution has been a constant issue.

And our contributors constantly lament that they have to destroy food because there’s not enough food banks who desire the materials.

There was an ad on television the other day about a market /just/ for those who get WIC vouchers. That someone could build a business just to support that client base really says something about how we’ve come to view the Federal government as the savior. I already got one Lord, I don’t want another in Washington DC.

As Ed McMahon said to JC,”You are correct, sir!”
Lib media fave Hillary lives or dies Feb 5.She has enough Chicom money to go forever but a super tuesday loss makes the crooked cash superfluous.

Great post! Look, I almost hate to quote such a part of the article because it sound so cold-hearted. But the truth is, I believe that markets work and it's government that fails. I lot can be done for the poor and the disadvantaged through the private sector. The citizens of the United States are very charitable and there are many charities (some that are actually run effectively because they're not overly bureaucratic).

Foe me, this issue comes down to the paternalists versus the individual. I am no anarchist -- there has to be some government to preserve order -- but the individual is being overlooked more and more and personal responsibility observed less and less. If people, particularly paternalists, actually believe that the culture is degenerating, applying statist solutions is going to exacerbate the problem.

[application of his faith to politics must include concerns for the environment, poverty and hunger.]

Just another social liberal and worse than Bush on domestic policies. Sad day when none of the front runners are true conservatives and Huckabee should be a conservative democrat as many politicians in the GOP now are.

Interesting, but what are statist solutions?

A very, very good example of the whole argument between paternalism (Naomi Klein) versus liberty (Milton Friedman) can be found by watching the video provided at this link. If you disdain or are skeptical what Dr. Friedman is saying, then you probably have sympathies to Huckabee. If you absolutely abhor what Naomi Klein is saying, you probably have issues with nearly every Republican candidate in the field but save your harshest criticism for the former Governor from Hope.

A great video; and the Huckster has gotten nothing but disdain from me from day one. I do admit mostly ignoring him, whereas I probably should have been fighting tooth and nail against him.

Interesting, but what are statist solutions?

Using government to impose legislation that: takes away personal choice regarding the type of food you eat, puts human beings financially responsible for curbing natural and cyclical climate change, redistributes income even more than it is now, implements smoking bans on private patronage-type businesses, etc. Does that answer your question?

Food banks in my area, including the one at our church, WISH they had your problem.

It is not too late to begin. Look, his nomination would not be a good thing, in my opinion, and fortunately there is still time to try and derail him through persuasion and influence. I will vote for the Republican come November but I at least don't want to be compelled to immediately run home and bathe afterward.

The only reason why they have this problem was from work a number of years ago when they approached restaurants and asked if they could help.

A great number shifted their standards by just a couple days on when food could be disposed of, the end result being fresher food for customers and those in need being fed. Approach your chamber of commerce and try the same thing.

Sounds like you and the other FReeper should exchange contact information. Rather than collecting food in your area, perhaps you should be asking for volunteer drivers, rental trucks, and gasoline cards.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

“It can’t just be about abortions and same-sex marriage,” he said.

Oh yes it can, and it will be unless we act quickly to thwart the Libs and open borders / chamber of commerce types.

I believe we are seeing the not so inconspicuous hand of the elites - both left and right - that are going to pull out ALL of the stops to make sure the two choices we have are total open borders wackos. In the end we will be told we are deciding between two candidates on emotional social issues like abortion, but the really important decisions - the ones that determine what kind of country we will have in the coming years - has long since been taken out of our hands and the “issues” in the public debate are carefully scripted to avoid ANY real discussion of immigration and illegals.

The liberation theology Huckster not to your liking? The we are prepping the dead campaign of McLame to be resurrected. We, the self-serving elites, will do whatever it takes to insure that WE call the shots as to who comes to this country and how and most importantly, how we offload the social costs of that decision while reaping the private profits to ourselves.
