Fred to MSM: "I Owe You Nothing."
nationalreview ^ | 01/06/08 | Jonathan Adler

Fred Thompson has been understandably frustrated with the media's obsession with "process" and horserace stories, particularly when media outlets fanned false rumors that he was ready to get out of the race. So Team Thompson is understandably happy with this exchange from NBC's Today Show, in which he refused to engage speculation about the source of anti-Thompson rumors and told Lester Holt "I owe you nothing."

Terse and defensive because of O’Reilly’s overinflated ego not being staisfied with Jerry Thompson and wanting Thompson himself...

I don’t blame them at all for not being asked what their positions are on issues and wasting their precious little airtime on these trivial side issues.

I also find it interesting that you think citing the Constitution as a guide was a mistake! It was a good answer, but not a great one. The critcism here seems a bit nit-picky to me. One could actually engage in this level of critcism on every single answer he gives. He coulda said, he shoulda said....

“Nixon showed contempt for the MSM and made fools of them with the “Checkers” speech. It took the b*stards many years, but they got him in the end.”

Yes, but they don’t have the monopoly any more and Nixon contributed a little to his own downfall.

Because the quote in context tells a different story.

Yeah, but that takes away from us framing the story like we want it framed.

Don't take our delusions away.

Because Fred does need a chance to get his message out. And Fred also knows that the American people have a low opinion of the MSM because of their bias and lack of actually reporting the facts. I believe when Fred hands it back to the MSM he scores points with most Americans. Especially the way Fred does it in a calm, strong way and acting like a gentleman all the time! GO FRED! - Exactly!

Fred wasn’t talking with the network’s entertainment division on that video. He was talking to what is loosely referred to as the “news” division.

Learn the difference.

Then I’m puzzled why you tried to disparage him for doing so at the beginning of this thread if you say it won’t sway you one way or the other?

Yeah, I was surprised on Friday I think it was when a woman called in to Rush and asked about the unacknowledged media boycott of Fred. Though she didn’t phrase it that way, and I believe she only asked about Fox News.

Anyway I was disappointed that Rush just turned the question back to her and then played off of her speculation to pretty much imply that Fred needs to give more pithy sound bites so they’ll play them more on TV. I wished he hadn’t seemed so eager to sidestep the real issue—and had given an actual answer.

The media slimeball didn't even have the manners to apologize for the false rumor and the press falling for it.

How to win friends and influence people.

First Thompson accuses another campaign of spreading a false rumor, then refuses to back it up with facts.

This is not how you impress the people at home.

Thompson’s political life began with the Democra-s Senate hearing to “get” President Nixon. I watched those hearing on TV. Thompson was the Republican/Nixon Defence Lawyer. The entire television and radio media was against the defence of the President. Every-once-in-a-while Fred would get some air time. He wrote a book about the Senate hearings and how “rigged” it was for the Democrats. You might recall that a Republican witness was testifying and Senator “InNoWay” shouted into his microphone, “he is lying”. It was not a fair hearing and it cost Nixon the Presidency.

If Fred Thompson can’t stand up to Bill O’Reilly, can we expect him to stand up to Bin Laden and Ahmadinajad?

Food for thought.

The media ran the false rumor. They are responsible for reporting the facts, not rumors. The media should have contacted Fred before running the story and the media should have announced it was false after Thompson said it was. They did not. They continued with the false story. The media needs to back their reports up with facts, not spread lies.
