Geist: Take Away the Charm and Huckabee's a Crackpot
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 01/15/2008 4:24:20 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

If a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down, does Mike Huckabee's sweet way with a word make tolerable views that would be rejected as extreme in the mouths of others less verbally gifted?

That's Willie Geist's view of the matter. The genius of the Morning Joe panelist normally resides in his ability to avoid the controversial while remaining interesting. But the anodyne-if-endearing Geist went out of character in today's opening segment on the subject of Mike Huckabee. And he did so in a manner the former Baptist preacher might not find so fetching.

The subject was a speech Huckabee gave yesterday in which he advocated changing the Constitution to adapt to the word of God.

Did you catch the part about Joe tweaking Mika about being subservient to her husband like Gov. Huckabee said his wife is. Joe said that's the one thing she's remembered about Gov. Huckabee's positions so far.

That was funny, and Mika did manage a pretty good deadpan while pretending to agree. I did mention it in passing in the original article.

My husband commented to me yesterday that he thought McCain was mentally unstable. I agree.
We are in deep $@#&, if either McCain or Huckabee are nominated.

If Huckabee fizzles, his followers will be looking for another prolife evangelical to fill the void. Hunter fits that bill, no one else in the race is evangelical.

The GOP doesn’t get it. They need to let this faction find a home. The amount of invective aimed at evangelicals is surprising, but then everyone wants their votes.

Huckabee has surged because he won a couple of debates and he’s got evangelical support. If a quick rise can happen to the liberal pro-life evangelical Huckster, it can happen to the conservative pro-life evangelical Hunter.

Prolife evangelicals will be very comfortable in Hunter’s camp, since he’s a prolife evangelical staunch conservative.
