Just ... months ago, the 2008 presidential contest seemed predetermined. ...Giuliani and Hillary Clinton were far ahead... .... Sen. Clinton was all but declared the foreordained winner a year in advance.
But not now. [snip]
The result of all this has been that while Hillary still polls ahead of the surging Obama in most states, in hypothetical general-election polls she runs behind Republican frontrunner, Sen. John McCain.
End of story?
Hardly. In reaction to McCains own surge and the Republican windfall, the conservative base went ballistic. Soon a Republican civil war broke out over how best to lose the election.
Despite McCains 82-percent career ranking by the American Conservative Union, and his support for balanced budgets, an end to pork-barrel spending and earmarks, strong support for the war, and expressed regret over once supporting the Bush illegal immigration reform package, McCain was branded by the conservative media as a sellout and a near liberal. Not to mention that he was supposedly too old and hot-tempered to be the Republican nominee. The more McCain was discovered not to be a perfect conservative, the more he was accused of not even being a good one.
Even stranger, the various Republican candidates began invoking Ronald Reagan...
Were conservatives supposed to forget that a maverick Reagan raised some taxes, signed an illegal-alien amnesty bill, expanded government, appointed centrist Supreme Court justices, advocated nuclear disarmament, sold arms to Iran, and pulled out of Lebanon but to remember only that John McCain was not for the original Bush tax cuts or once supported the administrations offer of a quasi-amnesty?
[snip]
Novembers vote may hinge on whether moderates and liberals are nauseated enough by the Clintons...to ... vote for a decorated Republican war hero that is, if his own flag-waving party doesnt destroy him first.

Almost in tears here. Not sure if I'm laughing or crying.
You're either dumb or obtuse. McCain put holds on multiple conservative judges. That is established fact. It's not a "vote." It's procedure. Would you like a list of the conservative justices we do not have in part because of McCain's willingness to play political games? I'll be happy to supply it.
You're a McCain supporter alright.
I noted that Goldwater supported a federal law to force private employers to hire homosexuals. You demanded a link to verify this. I provided the link. You went to the link, ignored the passage which verified my contention, and instead copied and pasted another passage dealing with another subject. I responded by copying and pasting the relevant passage. Your response is to wonder whether I want to kill, imprison, or otherwise abuse homosexuals.
How reminiscent of John McCain's attitude on amnesty and open borders. Denials. Evasions. False accusations.
Whats your point... He said if the senate passed it he would sign it but he elaborated on the Lesson of Securing the Border... What isn’t that what you want?
Hmmm. Well, he has a pro-life voting record, but how come he portrays pro-lifers to be evil and "immature."
Are you infected with MDS?
Thank you for parsing that as only a McCain supporter could.
Just to be clear, you and I agree that if the Senate passes McCain/Kennedy and McCain is President, he is on record saying he will sign that bill. Right?
So how would you like society to treat homosexuals? What is the “conservative” solution?
What if they started banding christians from companies? Is that ok too?
That bill did not require anyone to hire anyone. It just said the gays should get the same opportunties.
What could be more American then that?
You see conservatives are not conservatives anymore. They don’t even know what it means to be conservative.
When conservatives laugh at Goldwater then what else do you need to know to realize how far the conservatives have strayed from the path.
John
Are you serious? Even McCain’s supporters say he is interested in limited government. He wants to expand government to “make America great.” The only thing on that list that McCain supports is national defense. The rest are jokes to him. Remember, he said tax cuts are “for the rich.” He said Christians are “agents of intolerance.”
I’m looking forward to the first impeached female president.
Hanson lies like his candidate. Must be a prerequisite before joining the neo-con club.
Well, that's a matter of opinion, of course.
In response to your last two points... These are all moot anyway...
Romney loses to Clinton and Obama by large margins... I’m onboard with the winner and am not going to get all bent out of shape because he may have a few flaws in his past. For the number of years he’s been in the game it should be expected.. Hell even R.R. made some mistakes....
Well You won’t have too if you support McCain...
Just sayin...
Democratic congress will not impeach Hillary.
John
These eeevil flag wavers destroying the poor victim John McCain??
We aren't destroying McCain. McCain with his history over the past 10 years has done it to himself.
Please, please, don’t confuse people with facts.
John
Don't be such a poll hugger.
The polls have been very wrong this year.
The facts my a$$. The polls have been pathetic.
