The Field Poll, the state's best-known poll, shows McCain leading Romney, 32 percent to 24 percent.

But Romney's team decided to make a hail-Mary return after a couple of other polls were more encouraging. A Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released Sunday had Romney up by three points.

And an American Research Group poll released Sunday had the two in a statistical tie.

"California is in play," the Romney aide said.

Although that's certainly a minority opinion, it's a year of surprises.

McCain declined to speak at the event last year, instead renting a hospitality suite in the hotel.

WTF! I knew he didn't attend last year but I didn't realize he attended but didn't attend.

CA is not a winner take all. Even the Field Poll is right, it would be silly not to campaign there at all. With 124 delegates, even 30-40% will get him few delegates.

...the dramatic return to the nation's largest state surprised even some of his staff members.

The rally will be at 7:15 p.m. Pacific time on Monday, likely in the Los Angeles County port city of Long Beach.

Southern California PING!

Romney is trying to do just well enough Tuesday to give conservatives the time and incentive to mobilize against McCain, who has always had tense relations with party activists.

I have a feeling is is trying to win all the states. He is HOPING to do well. I doubt he is either Trying, Or Hoping, to "just do well enough".

Although I think he will TAKE doing "just well enough".

“...a cascade of setbacks...”

WTF? He just won Maine. Politico now seems determined to do to Romney what they did to Thompson. Whichever candidate is the most conservative at any point in time, they get their not-too-subtle little digs in on.

Rush was right on when he branded the MSM as the “drive-by” media.

I used my mom’s ballot to vote for Romney and mailed in my own for Edwards (he’s out already but I did it anyway).

Go Romeny and get those illegals out of my country!

A few days ago I emailed the Romney campaign from their website and said if you want to win California, come to Long Beach and declare your support for the C17 airlifter. Nice to know Mitt is listening. Boeing is the largest private employer in California and the C17 employs 25,000+ here counting suppliers. We are scared of McCain because he despises Boeing (and the Air Force) and wants to shut down the C17 plant in Long Beach, even though the Air Force is begging for more planes. That will have a huge affect on the economy here. McCain only wants to be president so he can settle scores with people he doesn’t like.

“We see opportunity,” said Romney spokesman Kevin Madden. Referring to McCain’s decision to campaign today in Massachusetts, he added: “With McCain unwisely spending two days in Massachusetts doing a head-fake, California is up for grabs.”
