Will California Buy Romney Time to Stay in the Race?
National Review ^ | February 4, 2008 | Bryon York

Last-minute polls send both candidates scrambling to the Golden State.

By Byron York

Phoenix, Ariz. — Since John McCain’s win in Florida, the conventional wisdom has been that he has nearly locked up the Republican presidential nomination. But now, just hours before Super Tuesday voting begins, a new factor has entered the equation: California. Polls, both public and those taken privately by the Romney campaign, show Mitt Romney with unexpected strength in the nation’s biggest state, sending both Romney and McCain rushing to make unscheduled stops there on Monday night and Tuesday. If Romney could win California, people in both campaigns say, the race could go on for several more weeks. And if that happens, conservatives who are trying to organize to stop McCain would have more time to work. At this late moment, California means everything.

A Reuters/C-Span/Zogby poll, finished Sunday, shows Romney leading McCain in California, 40 percent to 32 percent. A Rasmussen poll, finished Saturday, shows the two candidates tied at 38 percent. Other polls, taken before February first, showed McCain in the lead, sometimes by a substantial margin...[edit]

Does Romney have pictures of Coulter and Limbaugh having sex with children? What is the deal? How is he considered a conservative? Romney

Unfortunately for the countryclubbers in the party the Conservatives have several other options ~ including formation of a different party.

If that is his only victory, no it won't. Calfornia rules give 3 delegates per Congressional district to the winner of that district, plus 11 delegates for the Statewide winner.

It won't likely be a blowout.

The Romney Surge In California And Georgia, And The Leadership Of Talk Rado

Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 9:38 AM

Reuters/C-Span/Zogby has the Romney lead in California up to 8 points!

In Georgia, the McCain lead of 2 points is within the margin of error.

Huckabee voters across the country are indeed coming to Rush's conclusion that "a vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain."

Romney credits talk radio with helping to lead his comeback after his narrow loss in Florida.  While it is difficult to overstate Rush's influence on American conservatives, and while all of the talkers have audiences that do indeed listen intently, the real reason behind the Romney surge is the incredible connectedness of center-right voters and the sheer amount of data they take in.  The talkers just opened the spigots on the information, much like they did when the audience killed the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill in the spring and summer.

Rush sets the menu for more than 20 million people, and the rest of us for smaller but still very large audiences.

But the listeners decide what to order...

Mitt Romney will have my vote tomorrow as well as my husbands. It is a no brainer and he has always been our choice.

McCain absolutely does not have the temperament, nor the experience to govern our great country! He needs to go back to the halls of the senate lined with his Democratic buddies and create more mischief against the Republicans as he has been doing for the last 20 years. I would not want him doing this to conservatives or Republicans in the seat of the president.

Do not delude yourselves fellow FReepers, McCain has never been a friend of the GOP, nor has he been a friend to the conservative base—often making fun of them.If he does get the nomination he may be able to swindle and con some conservatives and Republicans--that absolutely did not vote for him in the primaries--to vote for him in the general, but many know his truth, and can't stand the man's pettiness, vindictiveness, disrespectful arrogance, elderly declining mental acuity, and I have not even mentioned the previous bills he has voted in that gave us all the finger while laying out the welcome mat to illegals, socialists, and Democrats.

Mitt Romney is my choice and can beat Hillary (too polarizing) and Obama (great orator, but very young and inexperienced). Romney is a strong communicator and debater and these are two areas we will need as the Republican candidate going forward (add on Romney is an experienced, effective, and successful leader that has managed and run things not like the two--three counting McCain--Senators) as we have a strong fight on our hands for our great country!

I’m praying for a grass roots movement, just like the one against the immigration bill, (Mccain/Kennedy remember?) that will rise up for Romney. I think the more you hear this man speak the more sense he makes. The criticsms against him are weak and personal.

"Romney will definitely get the gay vote."
"Reality says otherwise. See Gay Republicans Flock To McCain..."

further reinforcing the idea that the gay community doesn't consider the dangers of risky behavior :(

While watching the Super Bowl yesterday, the Romney commercial came on whereby they show him speaking to an audience and saying that Hillary and others have never even run a corner store, nevermind a large enterprise. My 15 year old daughter blurted out, “That is a great commercial. I’d vote for him.” This doesn’t prove a thing, but it is anecdotal evidence Romnet broke through the clutter and made an impact on one non-voter. The question is whether meaningful amounts of voters see things the same way.

Nicely stated, RonDog!

The MNM—including FOX—is purposely disgusting conservative voters to say, silently, “Stay home tomorrow, partiularly in CA!”.

THIS is what I believed turned it around for Romney in CA, and it wasn’t all or even mostly Rush (who refuses to endorse anyone):

-THE most important factor was the one handed to Mitt by McNasty—McNasty’s NASTY AND ARROGANT performance in the Simi Valley Debate in from of the GOP faithful, Nancy Reagan, et al. THAT was the turning point!

-Suckabee supporters saw [Suckabee’s] underhanded and obviously “planned” acts to assist McNasty as a slap in their loyal faces. Many of them couldn’t stomach McNasty anymore than anti-Invasion conservatives as many of us are. And they watched that debate, too, and saw how disgusting a man McNasty really is.

-Folling the Debate, the endorsements began to roll in. Romney began with Santorum, then added (ugh!) Hannity and Ingraham, then the black conservative Haim (sp?) and Rep. Brian Bilbray (very popular with conservatives in So. Cal.) to join Rep. Rohrbacher and other CA conservatives already in the Romney camp. The endorsements are STILL coming in! It is a shame Romney didn’t get these folks on board sooner, but McNasty’s win in Florida and then his horrific temperment at the Debate shook the conservative tree loose!

-Romney’s pre-Super Tuesday strategy of getting to as many battleground states as possible, which he really had no choice but to do.

-His ads must be winners, too, because talk radio and freerepublic alone couldn’t have changed the numbers so drastically.

-Another factor lost in all the talk and hype...Californians were impressed with what they saw in Romney at the Debate. He looked “Presidential”, he was respectful but tough, without the grimmacing and arrogance of McNasty, plus he looked great! I’m guessing that many Californians saw Romney for the first time and he handled himself superbly.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time for Mitt to get to and spend enough time in other states he might have been able to turn around.

I read an interesting article about what the candidates are doing today:

McCain did a rally in New York City, San Diego and then went home to Phoenix to vote.

Romney is in Tennesse, Georgia, Oklahoma and California today. He will travel to West Virginia tomorrow morning before heading to Massachussetts to vote.
