For some reason it’s not on here, maybe blacked out or something, or maybe they’re just idiots.

Welcome your son home for me too. I know he will tell everyone how well things are going over there, since the MSM won’t!
This is tax weekend for me, but I’ll be done in plenty of time for the race.

My son tells us that things are vastly improved from his arrival in Iraq a little over a year ago. His SF job is tied directly to pursuading cooperation by any means necessary (Psyops). His AO was north of Tikrit. We have another son in the same area with the 101st.

But he says we really need to be concerned for our soldiers south of Baghdad. They are the ones still fighting a vicious, uphill day to day fight. We have a nephew in that area with the 3rd ID.

Most areas are reasonably secure and improving. A few still need a lot of hard work.

OK Guys (and gals). I've being trying to "get into" NASCAR racing for several years now with little luck, but maybe this is the year, with a little help from you.

This morning I have 2 questions:

A. What is the difference between the Nationwide series and the Sprint Cup series since it seems that the same drivers race in each? Is the Saturday race really worth anything compared to the Sunday races or is it mostly for fun and fan enjoyment?

B. In the lineup for Sunday the NASCAR site shows the starting lineup and at the bottom are those who did not qualify. But many of those are shown as having better times than some of those who did qualify. Why?

Thanks for answering my questions. I'm a big IRL fan (My fantasy team finished third in the nation last year) but I working on becoming a NASCAR fan.

(Dario really qualified 4th for today's race? -- I'm shocked!)

A: Sprint Cup is the top level in the Nascar series. Nationwide is the next one down. Then the Craftsman Truck series. Used to be that a driver started at the bottom and worked their way up to the top level. That does not apply so much any more. Lot's of drivers from Sprint compete in the Nationwide series. Some because they just like to race. Most because it gets them more 'seat time' and possible info about the track and car setup's - although Sprint is using the COT and Nationwide is using the older style car this year. Nationwide is supposed to convert to the COT next year, I think.

B: Those are the Nascar rules. Pretty stupid. 43 spots are available for each race. If you are ranked in the top 35 in points, you don't need to qualify by speed. You are in the top 35 so you are guarrented a starting spot. The next 7 spots go to the fastest "go or go home" cars - they have to qualify on speed, and they may very well be faster than those in the top 35. The last spot is reserved for a past champion of the series that is not in the top 35 or did not qualify fast enough. If not used by a past champion, the 8th fastest "go or go homer" gets the spot.

When a new season starts, the top 35 from last years last race are used for the first 5 races, then the current top 35 ranking is used.

Daytona has a qualifying process all of it's own, and my fingers would fall off if I tried to explain it here. The remaining 35 races use the format I listed above.

Nascar Qualifying 101....?? make sense? I think I got the major parts covered.

I love Nascar and hope you enjoy it as well!

Welcome “ZGuy”...I’ll give your questions a shot.

The Nationwide series is primarily for the ‘new kids’.
It is somewhat like the Minor leagues vs. the Major Leagues.
The Cup drivers can participate as they see fit, however, many fans don’t like them taking the prize money from the new kids. The new kids do gain by racing with the ‘real pros’ and getting some experience against so called better drivers.

The cars in the Nationwide series have less horsepower, narrower wheel base than the new Car Of Today...

As for the qualifying MESS in effect these days, Nutscar has determined that the top 35 in are guaranteed a spot in the race so the fans and sponsors ‘get theirs’! Totally unfair of course as the fans overwhelmingly would rather have the the fastest 43 cars in the race. If you’re good then you should be able to ‘race it in’ instead of coasting it in!

I hope that answers your questions adequately.
There are much smurter people here than I, but they aren’t necessarily righter than me.

Pick a driver and stick with him. Get a good seat on the couch and ENJOY!

GRRRRR Rubbin’ is Racin’ and go 24!!

No problem.

Nationwide race is on today! You will see a lot of drivers that will be racing tomorrow as well.

BTW, my son is a huge F1 fan. I've watched quite a bit of it as well. Interseting that a lot of "open wheeler's" are migrating to Nascar. What a shock they must get the first time that drive that big 'ol lead sled......
