DAYTON, Ohio (AP) Spike Lee told a crowd at the University of Dayton to "do the right thing" in this year's presidential election.
"We are living in some very exciting times," Lee said Monday. "And the months leading up to the election in November will determine which way this country is going to go; forward or backward. It's up to you to do the right thing."
He said he supports Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination.
Dressed in a sweater, jeans and ball cap, Lee spoke of growing up in New York City, being a fairly average student at Morehouse College in Atlanta, and becoming a director.
"At first, I didn't know that people actually made movies," Lee said of his childhood. "We would go to the movies on the weekend and stay until our parents dragged us out.
"I didn't decide to become a filmmaker until I went to college. But I did realize that the richness of the African-American experience that I saw on the corner every day was not on the screen."
Last week, Lee was in Columbus to receive the $50,000 Wexner Prize that recognizes innovation, quality and integrity among artists.
Ya know...as a believable political opinion shaper, Lee is a good film maker.
Bull$hit!
I am not surprised, as Spike Lee is one of the biggest bigots and racists in the country. If he didn’t back the black candidate, I’d be surprised.
....and another black racist chimes in.
There are notable exceptions, and, yes, my statement was hyperbole, but I stand by the proposition.
The fact that 90+/- of black voters in primaries to date, have supported Obama (vs. Clinton) is a clear indication of the prejudice of black voters in the Democratic party.
I am sorry, the only explaination for this is discrimination by blacks in favor of Obama.
Similar prejudice has been demonstrated by Mormons, with 90+/- of Utah voters voting for Romney, 88% of self-identified voters in Arizonia voting for Romney (with similar figures in a couple other states), and 92% of donations from Utah going to Romney.
Huckabee had similiar (but less drastic) disproportiate support among his fellow evangelicals.
Identity politics and prejudice is alive and well in this nation -— in both the Republican and Democratic parties.
He's obviously from the Rockefeller wing of the party, dog.
Vote for Mookie!
IM wasn’t done quite in that way before. The ending especially was a lovely bit of understatement. ‘Levees’ had some great footage of the area and interviews. It was at its best when echoing his earlier ‘Four Little Girls’ about the 1963 church bombings...just being a witness to traumatic events. The tinfoil stuff I just just dismissed.
This just in....Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. plan on voting for Obama if he’s the nominee.
I think that some didn't realize the point you're making.
That story at your site about meeting the guy in Singapore who you then visited at his madrassa in Malaysia, and who offered you a job to teach English is a good story.
Are you going to be adding the next part soon? I'm curious how the story ends...
Okay, so (assuming you are white) are you a bigot if you choose McCain, Huckabee or Clinton? How do I know you didn’t choose them solely based on race? Are people really being biggoted if they choose someone they identify with? Is your spouse white? Are you a bigot because you didn’t marry an Asian or Latina?
He’s not going to “Do the Right Thing?”
“Okay, so (assuming you are white) are you a bigot if you choose McCain, Huckabee or Clinton?
Alas, only white guys were running for the Republican nomination, so this doesn’t help here. (I am a ethnically Jewish guy of Sephardic (Portugal via Mexico) origin, BTW, not that it matters. I identify with no one; most all my “tribe” have be killed in a rather ruthless and efficient manner.)
“Are people really being biggoted if they choose someone they identify with?” Part I.
Let me first answer your question with a question. Would I be biggoted if I only choose fellow Jewish people to work for me, because I “identify with them”? Of course I would.
“Are people really being biggoted if they choose someone they identify with?” Part II
You can’t judge a single individual’s decision on a statistical basis -— you can, however, detect bias in groups.
Black democrats are voting overwhelmingly for Obama — 90%+/- -— vs. Clinton, who holds substanially similiar positions. Whites and other groups, in contrast, are breaking more-or-less 50/50 between Obama/Clinton. If blacks were voting on the issues, they would have a similiar split between Obama/Clinton as the other groups voting.
But they are not.
Obviously, something is going on in the black sub-group, and it sure appears to be discrimination.
Now, keep in mind, I am not picking on blacks only for doing this -— old people broke for McCain, Mormons broke for Romney, and evangelicals broke for Huckabee. Women (until recently) were breaking for Hillary.
“Is your spouse white? Are you a bigot because you didnt marry an Asian or Latina?”
Voting (and working) and marriage are (or should be) distinct issues, as there is a lot more interpersonal things going on. But, for the record, I married an Anglican — which, in fairness, is kind of like having a Jewish wife, but they let Anglicans join the country club.
Okay MeanWestTexan:
I understand your argument, but I don’t necessarily agree with them. Thank G-d we are Americans, where one can disagree without being disagreeable.
( Jews are sexy.....oops did I say that out loud?)
LOL. Sexy. Ha.
Emailed your post to Mrs. MWT. She is not nearly as happy about it as I was.
