Rush, right rally to McCain
Politico ^ | Feb 21, 2008 | Mike Allen and Jonathan Martin

Posted on 02/21/2008 7:14:47 PM PST by ricks_place

Rush Limbaugh, who has been critical of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), embraced him Thursday now that they have a common enemy: The New York Times.

Limbaugh and other conservative commentators rushed to defend McCain on Thursday against a potentially damaging article in The New York Times, embracing a maverick they have often attacked.

"You're surprised that Page Six-type gossip is on the front page of The New York Times?" Limbaugh asked as he began his radio show. "Where have you been? How in the world can anybody be surprised?"

Limbaugh said earlier in an e-mail to Politico that the Times article about McCain’s relationship with a female lobbyist was a clear case of "the drive-by media ... trying to take him out."

Laura Ingraham, another influential conservative radio host, asserted that the Times waited until McCain was on the brink of the Republican presidential nomination and now is seeking to "contaminate" him with an article that she calls "absurd" and "ridiculous."

CBN.org, the website of the Christian Broadcasting Network, calls an attack by the Times "a conservative badge of honor."

Ironically, a potentially damaging article about McCain may help bond him to conservatives, who are relishing the fact that he now needs them.

"Is he going to learn the right lesson from this?” Limbaugh asked. “The lesson is that liberals are to be defeated."

Limbaugh wrote in an e-mail to Politico: “The story is not the story. The story is the drive-by media turning on its favorite maverick and trying to take him out. The media picked the GOP's candidate, the NYT endorsed him while they sat on this story and is now, with utter predictability, trying to destroy him.”

I agree. He should step down, like ALL alleged disgraced Republicans do, Huckabee - to avoid the appearance that he had anything to do with this - should step down as well. We should broker the Thompson/Hunter ticket and let the NYT, Clinton, and Obama wish they had never started to play this game called politics!

My take on what Rush said today was that some people let the media pick our candidate for us. They ENDORSED McCain, for goodness sake! McCain is so enamoured with the media and the dems loving him that he went out of his way to reach across the aisle to get their approval.

As Rush said today, becoming more liberal - in an attempt to get liberals to like you - never works! Rush said way before this all happened that this was exactly what was going to happen. He didn’t “rally” behind McCain. He said he wasn’t surprised that this happened. He predicted that the NYT was just endorsing him because they wanted HIM to be our candidate - because they were going to smear him all over the place once he became our nominee. Because they want a liberal to win & they knew that he would be so easy to defeat.

He’s the weakest candidate we could have put out there. And this is just the beginning. McCain said today that he was “disappointed” in the NYT. What an idiot! Was he REALLY expecting them to keep loving him? Of course he was - that’s why he stabbed us in the back so many times - to get their approval. And now he’s trying to turn it into a “badge of honor” because the NYT is picking on him now - I guess that means he really IS a real conservative.

They really need to change the name of the Republican Party to the Stupid Party. They just never learn.

Wishful thinking. Rush is NOT rallying behind McCain to endorse him.

Actually the parody he was playing was more of an insult to McCain than anything else.

Places the Times’ story could have originated from:

- the Clinton campaign;

- the Obama campaign;

- the Democratic National Committee.

It is really something to see the grasping at straws that goes on by the mccainacs.

He may be a clown.......but like it or not (mostly not),

he's OUR clown.

I suspect that lord McCain's media will gladly use him to poke their dirty ugly fingers in the eyes of conservatives. That was the purpose of their election 06 by Foleyizing those 'morals voters'. Problem is that the voters get blamed for the actions and deeds done by sleazy politicians. See if conservatives rally behind lord McCain that makes us hypocrites...

Does Politico ever get anything right?

Politico is a dirt bag outfit, if the want any creditability they need to say who planted the false stories about Fred Thompson.

No, actually Rush commented that now many conservatives will probably send money to McCain and get in his corner now that the NYTimes has dissed him. However, he did say, “you let the NYTimes pick your candidate, so now why are you grumbling about the NYTimes sliming him?” or something to that effect. Rush is no ninny.

Well his right. And some (including myself) have been saying this for months! How any conservative can support the MSM’s republican pick is beyond me. Its a simple rope-a-dope.

“Limbaugh will be all over this guy tomorrow.”

I sure as hell hope you’re right. These clowns at The Politico billed themselves as non-partisan when they started this website and the conservatives all accepted this as fact despite the fact that most/many of them are former Washington Post reporters. They have consistently misreported stories and their inside information is more often than not, wrong.

I am currently listening to today’s show on the internet (24/7) and I can promise you Rush is not coming to McCain’s rescue. He’s pointing out that only an idiot could not see this coming. And there’s McCain standing there with a vacant look on his face talking about being “disappointed”.

If McCain is truly disappointed he is a half-wit.

the NYT has unwittingly done mcCain a big favor

Not at all. This is simply the opening salvo to find the range. It wasn't supposed to stick. They will hit McCain over and over as they did Dole until they've painted him as someone that, at the minimum, the Religious Right cannot support. I have seen it before and I'm sure I'll see it again. Before long, they'll have everyone believing he has no fire in the belly. Oh... wait... they used that one already.

Rush predicted a long time ago, that the media would keep giving the “maverick” air time, but if McCain ever ran against a Dem, this is what would happen.

Yeah, so did the dishwasher down at NeeHao restaurant.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist.

But hey, if the voice on the radio said it, that's gospel, huh?

I must have missed that part of Rush today. He didn’t rally behind McCain, he rallied AGAINST the NYT.

Thanks for confirming my impression. This article must have been written in the Twilight Zone.

Politico is part of the DBM. They are trying to prop up their selection for the Republican candidate.

My point was (and I failed in making it) that we will be stuck with two choices and both of them will be WRONG.
