AK’s are much more weather and sand worthty . I’m pretty sure the ammo is interchangable with ours ( 5.62 mm.?)A lot of guys scavenge the enemy’s AK’s because of this very reason .

Oh boy, are you misinformed! Yes, AKs have an edge in sand worthiness, but M-16s work fine too if kept clean. As far as ammo interchangeability, NO! This is like saying, "I'm pretty sure BMW engines are interchangeable with Toyotas."

But to match up AKs vs M-16s, you must above all compare accuracy. At 100 yards and beyond, there is no comparison at all. A taliban with an AK who is 200 meters away from an American soldier with an M-16 is dead meat. He'll never get close enough to demonstrate the AK's great reliability.

AK47 fires a 7.62 x 39mm cartridge
M-16 fires a 5.56 x 45mm cartridge
They are not interchangeable. US troops are not opposed to acquiring combatants firearms and using them against the enemy. AK makes an entirely different sound when firing as opposed to the M16...

Just some friendly FYI

AK’s fire a 7.62 round and the M-16A2’s fire a 5.56 round. completely different.

I’ve got a couple AK’s from Somalia...

Sorry, you are misinformed...our guys love the M4...AK’s are ok in assault, but if you want to hit your target we have the best weapon period!...most reports about the M16 are not relevant today...

The Ammo is not interchangable, although, I believe you can use a single AK round, you just have to manually pull out the case, manually insert another, charge the weapon and pull the trigger. Not too efficient. The AK is more jam resistant, but the M-16 is a much better weapon at long range, which is where you want to be.

Bottom line is that there is absolutely no shortage of weapons or ammunition in Afghanistan.

Your first point is debatable ... your second point is absolutely not true.

Russian rifle calibers (7.62x54R, 7.62x39, 5.45x39) are utterly incompatible with NATO rifle calibers (7.62x51, 5.56x45).

AK-47’s shoot 7.62x39mm ammo, AK-74’s shoot 5.45x39mm ammo, and the M-16 series shoots 5.56x39mm NATO.

Good morning.
“AK’s are much more weather and sand worthty . I’m pretty sure the ammo is interchangable with ours ( 5.62 mm.?)A lot of guys scavenge the enemy’s AK’s because of this very reason .”

You just made two statements. The first has elements of truth but doesn’t prove that the AK is a superior weapon. The second statement, about caliber and the ability to interchange ammo is completely wrong.

NATO and Russian 7.62mm ammo is not interchangable. But in Afghan. I am sure the more durable AK is a desirable weapon

I assume most of the AK’S are either AK-47’S Or AKM’S. They are 7.62MM and are not interchangeable with M16’S.
