Gas Prices up, Production Down ($5.39 a gallon)

GORDA, Calif.- If you're going to be heading down the Big Sur Coastline anytime soon, you'll probably going to want to have a full tank before you leave with the price of crude oil skyrocketing. With gasoline following the same direction, the Americo gas station in Gorda, just south of Big Sur is selling premium unleaded gas for $5.39 a gallon. If you can do without premium regular's a relative bargain at $5.19.

Prices in many Bay Area cities remain above the statewide average with the price for a gallon of gas in Oakland at $3.51; San Francisco, $3.64; Salinas, $3.56; San Jose, $3.52; and Santa Cruz, $3.51. The average price for a gallon of gas in Santa Rosa sits just under the statewide average at $3.49 and in Vallejo a gallon is averaging $3.47, according to AAA. 03/05/08

BAY AREA, Calif.-The statewide average price for a gallon of gasoline has hit a all time high, AAA of Northern California announced Tuesday.

The average price throughout the state for one gallon of unleaded gas is $3.50, 1 cent more than the subsequent record for California, which was set in May of 2007.

"We're about 60 cents a gallon above where we were this time last year and last year was no bargain at the pump," said Sean Comey, AAA of Northern California spokesman, in a prepared statement.

"We may not have seen the worst of it yet," Comey said. "It's particularly troubling from the consumer's perspective that this is happening at this time of the year, when we often see prices that are relatively low."

OPEC will not put more oil on the global market, citing the stumbling U.S. economy as the reason for slackening demand in the near future.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries announced today that it decided not to pump more - or less - oil right now because crude supplies are plentiful and demand is expected to weaken in the second quarter.

It IS a sham! And the sister sham is of Ethanol as any kind of efficient, nonpolluting alternative. It's like our Elites in Washington are conspiring with the Arabs and US Corn Farmers to enslave the rest of us. Make high cost, polluting energy from our food? Half baked to say the least.

If not a conspiracy, and it is just plain incompetence, the end result is the same.

“OPEC will not put more oil on the global market”

Forget Iraq and Afghanistan.

Attack Saudi Arabia, suck ‘em dry and then leave ‘em to live on sand.

I’ve been to that gas station on Rte 1. It’s a solid 30 miles from the next station in either direction, and I could not discern any ways on or off Rte 1 for an option.

When I pulled up that April day in 2006 the gauge in my rental read “4 miles to empty” and I was THRILLED to pay $4.19 a gallon (going rate at Gorda on that day).

Reduce oil prices by about $2.00, gold falls, dollar rises, economy is on the mend.

The price of gasoline is a very tough one to get a grip on. Oil is traded as a commodity, so I know there is some price “adjustment” there.

One thing I’ve learned, there are very few coincidences in life. I don’t know the mechanism, but I am a little skeptical that there is an oil man in the office of the president, and oil prices have rocketed.

Blame it on who you will. Blame the Democrats for not drilling ANWAR, or the gulf, or using shale oil, I know I do. But, the voters will know the pain at the pump, and will take that pain to the polls in November.

I lived near Big Sur for about 4 years. Its Heavenly. You won’t be worried about Gas Prices when you are there. There are tens of State Parks and each has a hefty fees as well. Great Restaurants built near springs and lakes and on top of rocks right on the coastline. Did I mention Heavenly? Most people living in Pebble Beach or Big Sur area are truly filthy rich, so they don’t care. Everyone else is either a hiker or a tourist, and when you are a tourist, you don’t care about another 100 bucks.

Do Big Sur, Monterey, Carmel, 17 mile drive.......once in your life time. Worth it.

It's been much higher than that for a couple years in some Alaska communities.

You know, back when the price of gas started with a “1”, taxes, as a percentage of the cost, were significant. Now that gas prices start with a “3” and very soon a “4”, taxes only account for 10% of the cost at the pump. Not accounting for any sales tax. Even if they removed all taxes from the gas that I just filled my tank up with, I’d still be paying $3.29 a gallon.

Hmm. On a snowy, icy day here in Northern Ohio, I paid $2.999, down from $3.050, in a BP station. Shell down the road was $3.099. These are not discount stations.

This is a sham! There's more oil than they can refine! This is a sham! There's more oil than they can refine!

More crude oil supply may lower crude oil prices, but the demand for gasoline is also sensitive to refining capacity. The refineries can't keep up with demand. We're also in the period when refineries are switching from winter formulations to summer formulations. That takes some refinery capacity off line during the change. It happens every Spring and Fall.

Not just more oil they could refine, but they could build about 50 new nuke plants and cut off the demand for petroleum in power generation and heating and reduce demand by a significant margin. Transportation accounts for about 25% of our energy consumption. The rest is mostly power generation and heating.

Bottlenecks at refineries cause higher GAS prices but they use LESS CRUDE. But whenever you hear the ‘experts’ or infobabes talking about this, a refinery shutdown means HIGHER crude prices because of ‘a shortage of production’.

Of course, anybody with a set of legos could demonstrate that this is the opposite of reality. But in the new world of commodity speculation, any excuse is a good excuse to go long on oil futures.

And don’t cry for the poor Californians. They voted for Gray Davis who cancelled contracts with Chevron and others to drill the leases they already had along the California coast (miles and miles off the shore). The lack of production could be solved within 5 miles of the CA refineries door but the voters in CA keep voting for idiots who don’t want us to ever pull another drop of crude from US soil (or surrounding ocean).

And California practically has more SUVs than the rest of the other states combined so its not like they ‘really’ give a crap about the environment. But at some point, they will have to decide that they don’t want to try to fight the laws of economics and increase the supply since they have no intention of decreasing their driving habits (and, in most cases, they couldn’t if they wanted to because of sprawl)

“WTF ? Is there a natural disaster there the rest of us don’t know about yet?”

Big Sur is very isolated, and constantly subject to being closed by mudslides off the mountain to the East. Gas is available today for $3.46 /gallon in Carmel to the North and $3.50 /gallon in Morro Bay to the South. Fill up before driving California 1!
