Concept, eh? So it will be 4 or 5 years till VW makes it? Isn’t Honda coming out with a diesel hybrid next year?
I drove my son’s new 2008 Rabbit the other day. The 6spd Tiptronic in there is a blast to shift.

As a kid, my dad’s ‘79 Rabbit Diesel got 55 MPG. We had our own fueling tank at home. We were all set.
Seems that 14 MPG improvement is not much in 30 years.

"The Golf TDI Hybrid is currently a concept vehicle,"They can skip the hybrid part. I wouldn't buy one anyway.
What's wrong with just a small car and a small diesel engine?
This has already been done, and they get fantastic mileage.
The diesel Lupo got 74 mpg, as I recall.

I had a 1988 Honda CRX HF for a few years in the early 90s. It regularly got over 50 mpg city, and I recall clocking 70 mpg on a highway drive between DC and NYC.

Why not leave out the large battery, and just use the diesel running at some optimal rpm to generate power for the electric? Like a locomotive does, or some ships?
Seems like it ought to work.

I wonder if it breaks down like modern VW’s have a tendency to do. Truth is, for reliability, you’d be better off with GM, to say nothing of Toyota, Honda, or Nissan. At least with GM vehicles if they do break down the parts don’t cost nearly so much.

I would like to see the vehicle performance in hot and cold weather. My 2008 Mariner Hybrid (gas) gives great results in mild weather when the engine isn't required to provide heat or drive the air conditioner compressor. Once the weather migrates out of the range where the engine can remain off, the economy goes right down the tubes. My Mariner has does as well as 32 MPH in mild weather. This winter, the mileage dropped to 21.9 MPG. We are currently running at 25.7 MPG as the weather has moderated.

Just for reference:
$3/gallon gas
@ 30 mpg = $0.10/mile (Corvette, Mercedes E320)
@ 60 mpg = $0.20/mile (Lucky to achieve.)
10,000 miles per year. $1000 annual difference in fuel cost.
Which about offsets the cost to replace the batteries after a period of years.
