LAWRENCE, Mass. -- A growing number of criminals are cutting off or mutilating their fingertips to conceal their identity, officials said.
Lawrence law officials said they recently had a case in which a man tried unsuccessfully to hide his identity by removing his fingerprints, WCVB-TV in Boston reported.
"In this particular case, an individual came in and all 10 of his fingers had been stitched up at the point where the fingerprints would be. The crude surgery, obviously, it wasn't done in this country ... it couldn't be done legally," said Lawrence Police Chief John Romero.
The man told police that his name was Edgardo Tirado, but his hands made police suspicious.
"His story was that somebody cut him with a knife and he was putting his hands up in defense, and the individual happened to be precise enough to cut the tip of every finger where the fingerprints are," Romero said.
A Lawrence detective recognized the man as Gerald Perez. Police said he likely was trying to conceal his criminal record and avoid possible deportation.

Wouldn’t gloves be easier?
I don’t think these boys are very bright, when it all comes down to it.
Now if we can just get them to destroy all their DNA!
It’s to avoid a match to past crimes.
I thought the excerpt was from WTF tv....listed at the bottom of your post....LOL....
Thin gloves, sandpaper the tips (not permanent but there’s advantages to that). Hell you could get someone to make you really thin fake latex fingertips without any prints. If you’re going to spend money after all, you could spend it without back-alley surgery.
Maybe somebody could set up a “medical clinic” offering DNA changes. Hell, it’d be a great “sting” operation for law enforcement to bring in the perps, especially if they got the money upfront. Draw in the perps, collect the money, maybe lock up a couple bad guys. Win/win, huh?
There are rubber gloves available that have faux fingerprint ridges on the fingertips. They are made using a special type of printer and ink. These are not something your average criminal has access to or even is aware of. The user can wipe the fingertips across the forehead or any surface rich with skin oils and then leave someone else’s prints or randomly generated prints.
There are also DNA paks that contain DNA laden artifacts that are to be left at a scene to direct scrutiny towards someone other than the user...these are available for different races, sexes etc.
If I was that serious, I would make some latex gloves with phony prints on them. Some woman who is bedridden or somebody like that.
Turned out the perp worked at a pineapple plant and the acid from the pineapples had eaten away the ridges on his fingers - "book-em Dano".
Now if we can just convince them they need to eliminate their DNA..........
These guys are incredibly stupid and have a high tolerance for pain. When I was in college I accidentally sliced off my right index finger’s fingerprint with a meat slicer. I hurt like hell and shot blood everywhere. Finger tips have lots of nerve endings. It took about 3 months to completely heal and to this day I don’t have a fingerprint on that finger. Well actually I have a print, there just isn’t a line pattern on it. So I have a good sense the desperation and depth of depravity of these morons.
The funny part was the last line - they were still able to ID him from the remains of his finger prints.
So all that work and pain didn’t prevent a fingerprint ID.
and you know this how ? LOL
If you really want to do it right, then transplant the skin from the toes onto the finger tips. Thats the way they did it during the cold war when they wanted to change someone`s finger prints. For the right price, I`m sure you could find a doctor in Latin America or Asia to do it, hell, they`re doing discount sex change operations there already!Talk about betting the family jewels on a roll of the dice.
