Egypt puts concrete wall on Gaza border
ASSOCIATED PRESS ^ | March 6, 2008 | ASHRAF SWEILAM

El-ARISH, Egypt -- Egypt is building a 10-foot-high concrete wall along its border with Gaza to prevent any new breaches after Palestinian militants blasted through the barrier in January to escape a blockade of their territory, an official said.

The new wall replaces a mixed barbed-wire, iron and concrete barrier which was breached in several places when militants blew it open with explosives, added the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to talk to the media.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians flooded across the open border unchecked for 12 days before Egypt managed to reseal it. They snapped up food, fuel and other goods made scarce in Gaza by an Israeli closure, imposed after Hamas violently seized control of the strip in June

Ignoring the US issue for a second, how is it that Israel’s wall is controversial, and Egypt’s is OK? Both are trying to keep the same people out.

Fast forward to January 21, 2009, and the story reads...

Hundreds of thousands of illegal alien continued to flood across the open border today, unchecked. They snapped up food, fuel and other goods made scarce in America by a government already asleep at the switch and a new policy of Amnesty imposed after (Mccain/Clinton/Obama) seized control of the Presidency, yesterday.

That’s terrible! Many have denounced Israel and the USA for attempting much the same thing! I see a massive outcry against this terrible, inhumane deed! < /sarcasm>
No I don’t. It’s only bad if we do it.

Gee, don’t they know fences and walls don’t work, at least according to the liberal dems and republicans in this country.

It is transparently ridiculous for people to so readily compare the radicals in Gaza to Mexicans.

It is a perfect symptom of what is wrong with the current immigration debate.

This threat is so much more serious— but the Mexican wall comes first— thanks.

Exactly. Where are the "Peace not Walls" idiots that are calling for divestment from Israel?

“It is transparently ridiculous for people to so readily compare the radicals in Gaza to Mexicans.”

Good point: after stripping stores like locusts, the Gazans went home.
And they weren’t running drugs or driving drunk and killing Egyptians or consuming Egyptian social services and jamming their prisons . . . . .
In sum, point well taken.
