The Epicycles of Global Warming
The American Thinker ^ | 10 mar 08 | James Lewis

When True Believers begin to harbor doubts, they don't immediately give up the faith. It's too scary; too much pride and money has been invested; too many jobs and reputations are on the line; and they need to find a new reason to live. So they always try to add on new wrinkles and qualifications to their crumbling story.

Today that's happening with the global warming cult.

His proof involves long equations, but the bottom line is that the warming models assume that the atmosphere is infinitely thick. Why? Because it simplifies the math. If on the other hand, you assume the atmosphere is about 100 km thick (about 65 miles) -- which has the big advantage of being true -- the greenhouse effect disappears! No more global warming.

Interesting. It is amazing what a few bad assumptions can do to a model.

In the 1960s social psychologists studied a doomsday cult which made the big mistake of predicting the day of Armageddon. When that day came and went without crisping the world, the cult leaders didn't admit they were wrong. Instead, they discovered reasons why doomsday had been postponed. It was a triumph of faith over facts.

Sums up the "global warming" crowd quite nicely...

Well, no wonder it's getting hotter, if the sun is in the atmosphere.

/do I need one?

The article alludes to the Doomsday Clock and the "Day of Armmageddon!"

The "Tick..Tick..Tick" commercial regarding "Global Warming" is a Childess attempt, (pardon the pun) to emulate the timliness of the threat!

Sunday's Dallas Morning News had an op ed piece about the failure of our educational system and the dumbing down of our society.

Tick..Tick..Tick the Obomba is ticking!!! Ain't that Hillaryous?

Heard a round table discussion on the radio last week, actually everyone was on the same side of the table re globull warming. As they wrapped it up the moderator said “Thank you for attending this discussion on global warming, (background noise) I mean climate change”.

I’d be curious to see figures comparing how much money corporations, foundations and government agencies today give to global-warming skeptics versus how much they give to the other side. Again, I’m not suggesting that the researchers taking this money are corrupt, or that scientists will suppress the truth if it turns out the current prevailing view of climate change is wrong.-- John Tierney

As you said - "actually everyone was on the same side of the table re global warming"...

There is another side? I looked all through the NY Times and listened to CNN, there are no other sides.

The science establishment is now going after the Galileos of our time for the same reason, because orthodox scientists are pretty frail human beings and don't really like to be wrong.

The dirty little secret is that it was this way with Galileo, too. Galileo wasn't persecuted by the Church, he was persecuted by the orthodox scientists of his day who wanted to retain the Ptolemaic astronomical model. The Church was the middleman, the orthodox scientists were the instigators.

It's not really about global warming warming with these people. It's about fear and hatred of industrial civilization and economic progress, and hatred of man and the products of his use of reason.

The left hopes that we will all quiver when we hear the words “computer model”. They want us to quake in awe and accept whatever the scientist “proves” with his model.

All models are based on assumptions. The model does nothing more than calculate the solutions to equations. The model is just the assumptions carried out to 12 decimal places.

If the assumptions are wrong, the results will be very wrong. It’s impossible for all the assumptions to be right when dealing with a very complex system such as the weather.
