Election Board Considers Prosecuting Party Switchers

16,000 GOP Voters Crossed Over

CLEVELAND -- The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections is investigating whether any Republicans broke the law when they switched parties in the March 4 presidential primary to back the candidate that they perceived to be a weaker opponent for GOP nominee-in-waiting John McCain.

The board expects the results of the investigation March 31. The board wants to know if voters lied when they signed statements pledging allegiance to their new party.

About 16,000 GOP voters crossed over to vote for Democrats in the primary.

It's not clear whether the board will try to prosecute voters. A 2-2 tie by the board to pursue violators would have to be broken by Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, a Democrat.

A Brunner spokeswoman said she hasn't been contacted about prosecuting crossover voters.

Criminal prosecutions for violating loyalty oaths? That’s a winner.

This is in reality great news. We Rs can now declare ourselves as a protected class, identify ourselves as victims of cruel oppression and initiate demands for our own Affirmative Action Plan.

Honest I switched on March 4 and became a Democrat just so I could vote for Obama, I want my free health care, free housing and anything else that I can get my hands on without having to actually work for it :)

Come November I will claim temporary insanity and demand that they correct the voter roll to reflect my never ending loyalty to the GOP

I can pledge allegiance to a new party the same way I can promise to love, honor and obey in marriage vows.
Are they going to prosecute people seeking a divorce???

To be persecuted for this would be delicious. First you’d say that “I was leaving the GOP because the fought an unjust war! Now I’m switching back because the democrats are persecuting me unjustly!!!”

I have an idea, open elections no party affiliation. Why should I be beholden to one party or the other??
Why does some entity dem or republican get to tell me I can vote only straight ticket.
Screw ‘em all, I would like to vote for the best person regardless of party.
Or cross party line and screww with the opposition, it is after all the american way

I call BS on this. Firstly, who votes what is none of their business. That’s why we have the secret ballot. They would have to prove it and that would be next to impossible. If the state rules allow cross over, then that’s the rule.

This is a scare tactic by frightened people who have been hoisted on their own petard.

Achtung schnell! Thats what democrats represent. That “pledge” is non-binding. This does not represent freedom. In this country you can vote for who you want. This is a direct violation of your civil liberties. What a bunch of leftist fascists.

How do you PROVE someone was disingenuous?

Apparently, some people wrote "disclaimers" on their forms with language such as "for one day only".

Those are the situations they are talking about pursuing.
