Last Friday the New York Times asked me to comment on New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson's endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama for president. For 15 years, Richardson served with no small measure of distinction as the representative of New Mexico's 3rd Congressional District. But he gained national stature -- and his career took off -- when President Bill Clinton appointed him U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and later made him energy secretary.
So, when asked on Good Friday about Richardson's rejection of the Clintons, the metaphor was too good to pass by. I compared Richardson to Judas Iscariot. (And Matthew Dowd is right: Had it been the Fourth of July, I probably would have called him Benedict Arnold.)
I believed that Richardson's appointments in Bill Clinton's administration and his longtime personal relationship with both Clintons, combined with his numerous assurances to the Clintons and their supporters that he would never endorse any of Sen. Hillary Clinton's opponents, merited a strong response.
I was fully aware of what kind of response calling someone a Judas would evoke.
Certainly, it didn't take long for the resign-renounce-denounce complex to kick into high gear.
In a bit of bloviation that brought joy to my heart, Bill O'Reilly pronounced himself "appalled."
Keith Olbermann, about two degrees shy of the temperature necessary for self-combustion, quipped, "So if he's Judas in this analogy, who's Jesus?"
Even Diane Sawyer took the analogy to the extreme, questioning, "Are you saying that he made a deal of some kind when you talk about 30 shekels?"

Sorry for the twitching finger and double post.
Keith Olbermann, about two degrees shy of the temperature necessary for self-combustion, quipped, “So if he’s Judas in this analogy, who’s Jesus?”
I have to admit that quote is right on. Instead of self-combustion it should be: self-absorption. It is funny when they eat their own
LOL
The one redeeming factor about the whole thing is that the MSM finally discloses that it does know something about the writings in the Bible.
God does work in mysterious ways.
Or the goat doin’ the alien!
Carville looks like he was sired in the “love scene” from Deliverence.
Carville is right on about Bill Richardson. The little scumbag waited till he was sure who the winner would be and then threw Hillary under the bus. I gotta admit it’s poetic justice in a way. The Clinton’s are finding out what it’s like to be thrown under a bus. They did it enough.
So what is worse I wonder: disloyalty or blatant conflict of interest used for personal/professional gain?
The latter of course being when James Carville recently served as an independent CNN network commentator although he was actually officially appointed to the Hillary for President campaign. This continued until CNN was finally shamed into doing something about it. But I guess that totaly inapporpriate effort by Carville does not warrant a Wash Post editorial ..or even an insult for that matter.
You may call CNN a lot of thing...but “independent” isn’t one of them.
Also, he says he "dove" in--look up the word "dove" in the dictionary.
Actually- I think Carville was being honest about Richardson and I agree with him. Regardless of Bill and Hillary’s character (or lack of) what Richardson did and said was slimy and shows what his true character is..and is not.
I’m amused when unprincipled, unethical people get indignant towards other people.
The Clintons STAINED Richardson with MONICA!!! he was forced to hire her at the UN to get her out of DC.....and Richardson has paid a high price for that.
I agree with you about Carville. I generally don’t like anything he says but one thing I do like is that he says what he says and doesn’t apologize for it. That is one thing that has been driving me crazy about this whole campaign season of late. It seems that after every debate, speech, interview or public statement, Clinton and Obama are out apologizing, making excusing, having different memories, firing someone who made a comment, constantly trying to cover up some new lie. They would look like better candidates if they just said what they said and went on. No excuses. We aren’t stupid. We know Clinton lies -alot. We see the video of her trip to Bosnia. She doesn’t need to comment. It won’t help her. We find out about the lies. We know Obama went to that church and knew exactly what Rev. Wright stood for. That’s why is wife is only just for the first time proud of America, that’s why Obama won’t wear a flag pin or cross his heart during the pledge. He is fully sold in to that doctrine and he is taking his children with him to hear the hate speech. He is what he is. There is no need to come out with all the stuff like he didn’t hear any of that, or not much of it or maybe he did, but he didn’t agree with it. Come on, say what you say, quit making excuses. We’ll figure out the rest!
“further proof of what’s expected of you when you associate yourself with the Clintons”
The fact that this has legs at all is just more evidence of MSM bias, they clearly see the most minor internal details of democrat rivalry as serious, major, national stories.
I can’t see a republican mirror story being treated with this depth and respect as to it’s deeper meaning etc.
Carville proves once again that in a world of insufferable pricks,He’s the Gold Standard.
Carville and family have put their home on the selling block in Northern VA and are moving to - drum roll - Louisiana! (as per the WP)
As most people know, the Ragin’ Cajun is from LA. Somehow it seems appropriate that Carville would move back to one of the most corrupt places in the US. LOL.
But really, what does this move say? Imho, it says they know Clinton and co are done. Finis.
Carville is to political discussion what the average street-walking prostitute is to chastity; he’s only an insulting bought and paid for boob without a brain brought along by the Clintons for his pit bull alacrity for attacking the honorable people who don’t bow down for BJ Clinton, like Monica and he do.
wow.
