Cops bust high school beer kegger - root beer, that is
BayNews 9 ^ | Saturday, March 29, 2008 | ROBERT IMRIE

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- Cars lining the street. A house full of young people. A keg and drinking games inside. Police thought they had an underage boozing party on their hands.

But though they made dozens of teens take breath tests, none tested positive for alcohol. That's because the keg contained root beer.

The party was held by a high school student who wanted to show that teens don't always drink alcohol at their parties.

No one said anything about guilty. But when you have cops announcing themselves at an obvious party (dozens of cars, noise complaints), which is immediately followed by kids running away, that's probable cause that something illegal is going on inside. In this case, maybe nothing illegal was going on. But the police can not afford to take that risk. Hence the search and the breath tests.

I guess you've never been to a keg party? Maybe you're morally superior, so I'll excuse your ignorance. Maybe that wasn't in the story, but anyone who's ever been at a kegger, where he participants are underage, knows that when the cops show up, it's time to run. I suggest you learn a little more about kids, especially if you have some or plan on having them one day.

If kids are throwing a party, based on my experience in news and as a former teenaged partier myself, chances are there's plenty of drinking going on. If you don't beleive that, or can't grasp that reality, well, sorry...I don't buy that.

The cops announced they would be towing cars! Of course the kids would be running outside to prevent that. It does not excuse the treatment of these young people.

Man are you gullible. There's not a judge in this land (not even in Florida) that wouldn't agree that a cop had probable cause to believe underage drinking was going on in those circumstances. When cops are called to a loud teenage or college party, I'd be willing to bet that 99 times out of 100 it's not a root beer party.

Let me guess...you're gonna try this same thing with your high school buddies now? Please do...I hope they stick you with the bill.

Yup, also from Ozaukee County and we have a bunch of Barney Fifes on the force, I am glad I live in Saukville where you have to try and get pulled over, unlike a certain city to the north situated on the lake.

I hope they were drinking Sprecher Root Beer that is some good stuff.

Citations? Dunno...the article didn't say anything about them. But the cops responded to complaints that cars were blocking the road, so it stands to figure that if you don't want the cops called, you'd probably have your guests park legally, right?

But of course, the punk evidently wanted the cops to come so he could oplay his cute little game of "gotcha".

You would have to dismiss the case, as the evidence was tampered with and that is the sole basis for the case. I also don’t see how it would be trafficing as signing for a package is nothing more than a liability release for the delivery company.

Straight shot east here. I lived in Saukville when the cops there were known for pulling everyone over that they did not recognize. The Port ones are the worst. They watch the kids here waiting for anything they can use for “probable cause”. They hand out tickets like candy. My son knows he is not to speak with them no matter what. I will go to the station for him.
Then, you hear about the guy who called 911 and it took 2 hours for a Port cop to get there. The reason? The 2 cops on duty were busy transporting folks to the jail! Not together.Duh!

Saukville did have a Maybury Good ol’Boy type atmosphere a while ago. I do not really remember that time as I was too young. But I am happy with the majority of the people on the police force. I can say however that I have never been pulled over despite going 5-7 over all the time. (Maybe its my Reagan bumpet sticker)

These were kids having a good time (maybe trying to be wiseguyish, but you don't know the real reason for the party)

I like to hang out in bars but I have never drank alcohol in my life and never intend to. Does a police officer have the right to pull me over and give me a field sobriety test, just because he saw me leave a bar?

This was only about 10 years ago. But, I was not from here, so.... Port,Fredonia,et al are all pretty revenue oriented. Speeding tickets, disorderly conducts etc. They don’t care if you are local or not! lol Watch out on 33 just at the funeral home. They get all of the out of towners there. The cop waits on the side street next to the bowling alley. lol

Don't refer me to other posts, tell me in your own words. Why is the police chief's explanation lame?

I know all about the Funeral Home. Technically that is a speed trap as the speed drops 20MPH instantly. I try to avoid Port at all costs, but sometimes I like going for a drive.

I am only 23 and only driving for a year, so I do not know how the police use to operate, despite knowing all of them by name and appearance. (I was lucky my Dad was the type of person who would make friends with everyone)

If you are ever going into Port from Saukville on 33, watch out as the Police to hangout in the meat market parking lot as there is a 10MPH change at the intersection past the bridge.
