Questions surround claim of bullying at Lynn's Brickett Elementary (11 y/o put in intensive care)
The Daily Item ^ | April 1, 2008 | Dan Baer

Posted on 04/01/2008 5:00:37 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Family members first spoke to the Item Friday afternoon, alleging that 11-year-old Mathew Mumbauer was viciously attacked by bullies while he was in school, leaving him in intensive care at Massachusetts General Hospital, paralyzed from the chest down and suffering from a collapsed lung.

Mumbauer's cousin, Audrey Spencer, said Friday that the injuries were caused when he was pushed down a flight of stairs at the school, and resulted in Mumbauer being placed on a ventilator with a tracheotomy tube.

Spencer said the child's family is preparing to sue the School Department, and have organized the "Mission of Love for Mathew" fundraiser for Mumbauer set to take place April 12 at the First Congregational Church at 300 Central St.

According to Spencer and several additional unnamed sources, the student was able to finish the day at school after the alleged attack, including a trip to the nurse's office where he complained of a leg injury. When he woke up the next day, he was suffering from more serious symptoms and was transported to Mass. General where he has remained since.

It is unclear whether the student sought attention at another hospital before Mass. General. Family members say Mumbauer has been bullied throughout the school year, and it has become a persistent problem.

According to School Department officials, Mumbauer was last seen in school on March 10, the day of the alleged incident, however, his family did not inform the department of the situation until last week.

After speaking with the student's teachers and Brickett school officials, however, the School Department has questioned the validity of the accusations, and says there is no evidence of the incident taking place on school grounds.

Notice how the school is trying to weasel its way out of responsibility

No I didn't.

Did you notice that no evidence was presented to indicate the school was at fault?

And perhaps you missed the mother's statement:

Mumbauer's mother, Alyssa Cormier, who has declined to contact the Item despite repeated attempts through Spencer, told WBZ news that her son told a doctor he was not sure if the push was intentional.

Call me skeptical, but I would like to hear some evidence before I finalize an opinion.

A bunch of us were playing tackle football during lunch hour one day and my friend took a shot to the head.

I guess I should consider myself lucky. Similar situation for me, after my head injury I continued playing, had soda's with my friends, went home showered, and woke up at 2:30 AM strapped to a hospital bed with no memory of the 12 hours, or so, that had lapsed.

No long term effects though for me.

Ouch! The same thing happened to me in college. One day I was in my room stucying. I heard something bouncing off the walls in the hallway outside. I stuck my head out the door and “wham” I got hit right between the eyes with a 6-iron. There were some people playing golf in the hallway. I had to go to the emergency room to get 4 stitches to close the wound.

This article claims that the boy was bullied because of his size (he is obese.) Maybe people might think of him, paralyzed from the chest down, the next time they're tempted to make a "fat joke" or post some ha-ha funny photograph of an obese person.

Actually, something similar happened to one of my grandkids, and he went to ER. The school’s response was shameful.

We got all of the grandkids out of public school, 3 immediately, the others as we could. Its been 5 years now and I have never regretted it, I only wish we had done it sooner, I wish I had done it when my own kids were young.

Compared to the average teen they are very well adjusted, very at ease with themselves and with adults. They simply aren’t like teens as I remember them from my own teen years, my kids’s teen years, or the average teens we encounter around about. The difference in their personality and character are worth the price. I regret we didn’t do it sooner.

We all know about the shamefully poor curriculum, the awful social environment, the efforts to foist attitudes that go against everything any traditional American believes in whether religious or not. Here But, obviously, private schools are expensive, homeschooling is scary or sometimes not an option, most people simply do not have the money when they are young parents to even think about getting their kids out.

But if you do it, you may have to look at several options to find the right one, but you won’t regret it. The grandparents may have to help, but it is worth it.

MY DAUGHTER IN 4th grade was doing no homework,i asked the teacher and she pointed out she had really[REALLY]good grades, i enrolled her in bible school, she imediately fell behind, but due to an exceptional work ethic caught up and got really good grades again, and had homework every nite. the best gift i ever gave her was getting her out of the government/union school.she eventually secured a masters in speech pathology, using study habits learned in private school along the way.looking back i wish i had removed my other children from the union grip.

Heck in our public schools the victim is to crawl up in a ball and let hell get beat out of him/her. I told the Principal not my kid.

My son is in 8th grade in the public school, and he rarely has homework.

For high school, we’ve enrolled him in a private Christian school. We just got back from the incoming parent’s night, and I am so excited!

My son is smart, but I think he’s going to be in shock next year. It will be interesting to see how he handles everything.

Just one of many reasons my child will never ever ever step into a public school as a student.

If you have the ability and means to provide an education in any other way to your children and don’t, you engage in child abuse as far as I’m concerned.

Public Schools are to education, what public housing is to housing. There is no difference folks... Most would never ever move into a public housing development if they had a choice, yet those same people smile and send their kids off to public schools daily. Insanity.

I guess you missed this part:

No, I saw that. Having read the entire article, I saw no evidence to form a firm judgement on guilt of either of the parties.

The kid himself said it may have been an accident and then there is that curious time delay between the incident and the reporting of it.

As stated previously, more evidence is required.
