SCRANTON, Pa. - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama kicked off a day of campaigning in Pennsylvania by dropping by a Scranton diner for a breakfast of waffles, sausage and orange juice.
But the press corps went hungry hungry for an answer that is.
The Illinois senator brushed aside a question from one reporter on his reaction to former President Jimmy Carters description of a positive meeting with leaders of the Islamist Palestinian group Hamas.
Why cant I just eat my waffle? Obama replied.
Reporters traveling with the Illinois senator, fighting with his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton over Pennsylvania ahead of its vote on Tuesday, are venting frustration over a lack of access to the candidate lately. Obama has not held a press availability in 10 days, though he has given dozens of interviews to local press in Pennyslvania.
Republicans have pounced on Obamas waffle comment, suggesting he is evading tough questions.
Today, Obama continued to dodge questions from the media, responding that he just wanted to eat his waffle, the Republican National Committee said in an email sent to reporters that included press accounts of the waffle incident at the Glider diner.
Both Obama and Clinton are far less accessible to the media than presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, known for holding lengthy question-and-answer sessions with reporters on his Straight Talk Express bus.
The sessions last so long that some reporters say they run out of questions.
I’d say the same thing for McCain, as the press is just as ridiculous as the RNC. And while the press has given him a complete pass so far, the RNC trying to make his morning meal out to be a hard hitting political point is rather silly. I don’t think waffles equates to terrorists, abortion or his racist pastor, and no matter how the RNC tries, picking this particular instance isn’t going to win them any votes.
I’ll have to get it. Thanks for the reference. ;-)
Why don't you all just let Obama EAT HIS WAFFLE!!!
Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama starts his day with a waffle.
It does look good.
So..I wonder whether Glenn still has his waffle mobile ready to go at a moment’s notice?
Is this going to be Obama’s “can I get me a huntin’ license?” moment?
What, no fried chicken and grits too? ;)
Hamas supports Obama : the Waffle man.
.
Did he eat the waffle?
Yesterday he left half of it on his plate, and it was bid up to $20,000 on eBay before it was evidently withdrawn.
Brit Hume just had the e-bay waffle story on his show. Brit could hardly contain his laughter.
“It’s probably part of his behavioral change to get off of cigarettes.”
Good point. He picked a lousy time to quit smoking.
Come to think of it, he picked a lousy time to quit his pastor, too.
Is it a waffle when the ingredients mix, or when they begin to cook. Or when they are fully cooked. Or how about a month after they are cooked?
What about waffles made with refined flour, rendered nutritionless because of capitalist greed.
Waffles served in public school, with fruit or syrup? What about the eggs in waffles; eggs from cruel henhouses.
Waffles: leavened flour or not?
Waffles.
LOL! Nothing like Waffle House humor.
BO is trying to be clever :
Chomping down on sausage and waffles at Glider’s Diner today with Sen. Bob Casey at his side, Barack Obama declined, in a sense, to comment on Jimmy Carter’s meeting with Hamas.
Asked if he had heard that Carter reported a positive outcome from the meeting, Obama looked at the reporter who questioned him and said, “Why can’t I just eat my waffle?”
Asked again by the reporter, Obama bit. Not at the question but into a butter-covered bite of Glider’s specialty over-size Belgian waffles. With a wink this time ...
