Automatic chains? Now, there is a bit of engineering.

LOL

At least the beer bottle have gone away, for now.

Misrable driving, most evryone had switched to summer tires - tons of fender benders on hillside - O’Mally and Abot were closed for hours. Glad I live on Poverty Flats...

Last year it snowed one more time in May and then we had no summer at all. Right now it feels like we had our summer four days this week and we are back to winter for good. But, who knows.

We worried about that, but we are in the MPL district, and seem to have pretty good luck that way.

(Snort) Chains? Chains will completely mess up your tires at 80MPH.

I actually had a set of chains for my Prime Mover (1 ton) - its a 2X2 - but never used them as we drive it only in the summer.

Studes are so much better, most everyone has two sets of tires, winter and summer. And like sahoes, they sem to last longer when you can switch them out. I drive maybe 50 miles a week, so that helps as well.

Automatic chains are a neat solution. Driver never has to get out of his driver seat.

We had studded snow tires in VA back in the sixties - but I think that they are illegal, now.

I really don’t know.

I don’t bother with chains on my plows - I figure the liability is worse than the improvement in traction.

Instead, I just refuse to plow hills.

That chain system is pretty darn cool.

State DOT tries to blame asphalt wear and ruts on studs. Total BS in my opinion. It’s a cover-up for using more sand (going cheap) in the paving mix instead of D2 crushed rock.

ADOT is concerned with pavement wear on bridges. It’s bogus. They do more patching by 1000X due to permafrost damage.

Roas here are pretty lousy. I thought it was because of the kickbacks to Union thugs and the local pols left little money for sily stuff, like material.

Yeah, that's why the stretch of the Glenn north of Birchwood they repaved this summer was starting to show the beginnings of ruts before the studs even came on.

"What is with studded tires? Why not use chains?

Never used chains before. Suppose they work good while you have snow but might be a bit problematic when the streets are clear. With studs you can drive on dry and snowy road conditions. That is pretty much the pattern all winter here.
