New York Abortion Center Closes After 40 Days for Life Pro-Life Campaign

New City, NY (LifeNews.com) -- A local abortion center in a northern suburb of New York City has closed as a result of the recent 40 Days for Life campaign. The Abortion Services facility in the New City, New York was one of more than 50 abortion centers across the nation that saw prayer vigils during the spring event.

David Bereit, national campaign director, told LifeNews.com on Thursday night that his group joins pro-lifers in Rockland County, New York in rejoicing over the news.

He said the abortion business was "responsible for ending the lives of untold numbers of innocent unborn children over its many years of operation."

"The unceasing prayers of these faithful people have been answered," he said.

Bereit said he visited one night of the prayer vigil as he traveled the country to support the local efforts.

"My family and I visited that particular clinic vigil on a snowy night earlier this year," he said. "My wife and children were photographed alongside a young man who carried a sign reading, 'Nothing is impossible with God.' That is certainly the case here."

"We are humbled to know that people participating in the 40 Days for Life campaign may have played a role in the peaceful closure of this abortion center," he said.

Bereit said two other abortion centers stopped doing abortions as a result of the campaign, although the stoppage may be temporary.

Pro-life advocates in Lincoln, Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Iowa were surprised that abortions stopped at two centers there, likely because the local abortion practitioner who does abortions at both centers was unavailable.

He said his group learned that at least one mother decided against having an abortion after learning the local Planned Parenthood had stopped doing them for awhile.

"She took that as a sign from God that her baby was meant to live," Bereit said.

Bereit told LifeNews.com that local groups from Greenville, South Carolina; Providence, Rhode Island and Sacramento, California have also told him of mothers and children who survived after decisions to have abortions were canceled.

The 40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that features 40 days of prayer and fasting, constant peaceful vigil outside an abortion facility and intense public outreach.

Plans are now under way for another round of concurrent 40 Days for Life campaigns this fall from September 24 through November 2.
