Sorry ... Moyers and Wright.
The African-American culture defines their identity alone. They do not necessarily look up the US laws when they do so.
In the African-American community, they do not usually embrace those of African decent who immigrate here from the Caribbean Islands or South America. In the eyes of African-Americans, there is a distinction. Remarkably, in terms of their ties to Africa, most of them would find that their lineages are similar. This does not matter when it comes to inclusion. African-Americans simply see themselves as a different group of “Africans” than those in the southern regions of the Americas.
Not to mention, Egypt, an Arabic country, is in Africa, for goodness sakes! Many members of the African-American culture identify with the history of Egyptians, rightly or wrongly. They embrace this culture because of its location on the African continent. They embrace it because it is more prosperous than Sudan. They embrace it because of its rich history and they want to tie themselves to the Pharoahs and a prosperous time in African history. This is their right, as a group.
When a specific group forms, they set up their own identifiers that separate themselves from others. This is their right, regardless if the group is something as non-raced based as the local SPCA, or the Afrocentric NAACP.
If you asked Obama, he would say he is an African-American, even if his bloodline doesn’t support it. He is desperate to be identified with this group, because it will carry him through to the nomination. I doubt he wants much attention paid to any Arabic ancestry.
And frankly, because he was born in America he has every right to aspire to rise to the presidency. Nothing about his ancestors changes his nationality, and his ancestry is not a threat to him.
Most of those who are voting for him do so because they vote in lock step with the Democratic party, it is that simple. They are not curious about his ancestry, nor do they hold it against him.
If nothing else, much of black America sees him as a hopeful sign for their futures. They disregard Wright because they see Obama as one of them who has risen to the most exclusive club in the world, the US Senate. They see his senate seat as a launching pad to the White House.
His goal is to be America’s first black president, much to Bill Clinton’s chagrin and he very well may succeed.
Well at least these guys where not under heavy sniper fire stepping off a plane. What’s their gripe.</sarc>
