The makers of a small, digital camera that attaches to the barrel of a gun say the device would have ended any dispute about what happened in the Sean Bell shooting.
Now, a former Bronx homicide prosecutor who helped develop the Pistol Cam wants the NYPD to consider putting the audio and video gadget on its service weapons.

When the media and LEO administrators see all the times cops draw their weapons without firing them, then they will restrict cops from drawing their weapons when they need to . Cops will be at an even greater disadvantage than they already are.
Maybe surveillance cameras, like they use in London, would be better. Why not film the criminals instead of the cops?
Nah. The picture quality will never be good enough for some people.
I say reverse the idea -- start with a high resolution, studio-quality camera like the "Steady-Cam" and add a gun to it. Better pictures PLUS a a stable platform from which to shoot.
When Isnora began walking toward the car, Guzman drove into the detective’s legs, knocking him down. The officers unleashed a barrage of bullets, killing Bell and injuring Guzman and Benefield.
ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON[CAR] INITIATED THIS CONFRONTATION.
Somewhere, an undercover cop will point his service weapon at somebody solely for the purpose of taking a picture. The citizen, mistaking the cop’s identity as well as his intent, will return fire and kill the cop. Then we’ll hear the usual liberal media song and dance about how citizens can’t be trusted with guns.
His own foot...
What precludes cops from also being criminals?
Oh yeah!
No one wants to be a cop anymore, (I don't blame them)...Now add this into the mix. LOL!
Wonder if there is a pistol grip or smaller shoulder model for the current generation of camcorders. My mini DV camcorder is so light, I have to be double careful on any moves. I am primarily a still person but have peddled a little stock video footage.
I was up visiting my folks on the farm and lucked out as there was a field that they lease out was being raked and baled. I shot up a fair amount of photo and a couple hours of video. A lot of video was locked down and left kind of loose framing wise just to allow stuff to come in and out frame. Most of my clips are 10-20 seconds long anyway.
I saw something else neat that my dad had just bought. He got a hold of a 5 Ton still with the OD paint scheme and it apparently runs great. I hope to do some stuff with it on my next visit up for footage. I kind of miss what 2 1/2 time I had.
Me and my aunt tried some silly stuff with her fainting goats. I am going to have to work on their acting abilities. My dad has one of those old style blasting machines (plunger) that looks pretty good but no guts in it. We tried for a little while before it got dark to see if any of goats would push the plunger down. It takes almost no effort. No avail this time, the otherwise adventerous and curious goats weren't interested.
The cops would be caught on the same surveillance cameras as the criminals, but the left doesn’t want surveillance cameras.
yup. And some nice photos from in front of that car’s bumper would make that unquestionable.
The LEFT doesn't want them? I don't want them either and I sure as he!! ain't the left. People don't want the government spying on them, period.
People put way too much trust in the government. They will control the cameras - they will decide what gets viewed and what gets destroyed. Trusting them to nail a cop for a criminal act is like trusting a fox to guard the henhouse.
Too big - Too heavy - Adds a light that you may not want to be on.
Looks like a Dork looking to make a few bucks from the Bell tragedy.
A better solution would be a hat (or shoulder or badge or belt) cam - with all the larger heavier bits on the belt and the CCD mounted for a good view. This thing is beyond stupid.
I’m not familiar with the details of the Bell case. What was the reason given for discharging 50 or so rounds, with no weapon being found? Were other shell casings found, but no weapon or what?
Might as well just take away their firearms and have them blow a whistle (or throw rocks).
Look at the size of that honking mother. It must be 10 ounces or more in weight. How will this fit in a duty holster? The added weight will affect the reliability of the slide action. You can't just add a another pound to the front of a sidearm and expect reliability without making other qadjustments. Fired shots are going to be low and nearly out of control. This stupid thing will get police killed.
Will off-duty cops be compelled to mount a big honkin' camera on their smaller concealable backup pistols?
This camera is even stupider than the inventor's hairstyle, and that's saying something.
You might want to ask someone who knows something about firearms if this camera is a good idea.
Oh really? What would the pistol cam show in the moments before the gun was drawn when the events were transpiring resulting in the decision to draw? How clear would the video be with the pistol popping off rounds and recoiling after each one?
