Senate rejects offshore drilling bill

The U.S. Senate Tuesday rejected an attempt to expand offshore oil and gas drilling to allow the states to generate revenue.

The Republican-backed proposal would have allowed states to drill off their coasts and share revenues with the federal government, the (Newport News, Va.) Daily Press reported.

The amendment would have amended a federal ban prohibiting offshore drilling along most coastal states, the newspaper said.

The state proposal was packaged with other controversial measures, including drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The amendment was rejected on a mostly party-line vote of 42 to 56.

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., urged his colleagues to support the measure, noting that his home state of Louisiana has profited from offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

"We need to expand on that policy to dramatically increase our domestic energy production," he said.

But Democrats said an expansion of offshore drilling would do little to reduce Americans' dependence on foreign oil.

"We can't drill our way out of this problem," said Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill. "We can't drill our way to lower gas prices."

Yeah. No drilling. No Anwar. No nuclear plants. Thanks guys... Our Congressional leaders are rudderless, and less than useless.
Thanks to the Repubs for bringing this bill forward, but at the end of day -- still nada...

Hey Dick! What we can't do is what you liberals want and that is to outlaw the combustion engine!

More supply on the market will reduce gas prices you idiot!

Given that we've been waiting for Congress to intelligently address energy independence since the 1973 oil embargo, I'm keeping an eye on developments in ethanol production.

First, the bad news about ethanol. Ethanol fires are evidently harder to control than gasoline fires.

Ethanol fires hard to control 1
Ethanol fires hard to control 2
Hopefully, ways will be developed to make controlling ethanol fires easier.

On the brighter side concerning ethanol, there's now evidence that people might get as much, or more, bang per buck for their gas dollars with gas / ethanol mixtures.

Gas-competitive gas / ethanol mixtures
Also, I was surprised by the introduction of a machine for making home-made ethanol.
EFuel100
In stark contrast to the 1700 gallons of water required to make one gallon of corn-based ethanol as indicated by the OP, the EFuel100 uses only 170 gallons of water to produce 35 gallons of ethanol In other words, the EFuel100 uses less than 1% as much water as corn ethanol, under five gallons, to produce one gallon of ethanol (corrections welcome).

But watch out for fines for violating biofuel regulations.

Finally, progress is being made in the development of other non-corn ethanol production technologies as well.

Lets see, stupid Pelosi and Turbin Durbin along with other Dems are demanding OPEC produce more oil but we shouldn't send more money to the middle east and not be dependent on foreign oil but we can't allow ANY further drilling here because it won't make any difference but we need to stop filling the Strategic Reserve because it will lower prices but any further domestic production won't make any difference. Do I have this right?

Every one of these Washington bastards should be tarred and feathered and run out of town. These people are insane and demented. The economy will be destroyed with these idiots running things.

Thank you! “Idiot” being the operative word. Durbin has the “nads” the size of petit pois, if he has any at all. In the meantime, I will continue to drive my big engine Cadillac CTS and fill up with mid-grade gas.

We have to live in one of the f#%king dumbest countries on Earth.

We have to be on the only country that could discover massive amounts of oil somewhere and the majority of our politicians would figure out a way NOT to drill for it!!

Incredible......

We should just ban the use of energy in this country. That would greatly eliminate carbon emissions, especially if we ban forest fires and stuff.

We'd be energy independent!

Isn’t is odd that the dems say this or that won’t work, but they never follow up that statement with an alternative proposal.

Wait until the voters elect yet more left wing morons to Congress this year.

The Republicans have THE campaign issue to run on now and beat the Democrats over the head with it, yet they are still holding their asses.
