Frank Buckles, 107, America's last living World War I veteran, relaxes in his 18th-century stone farmhouse in Charles Town, W.V.

Frank Buckles, on his way to a reception for Gen. John J. Pershing at the Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City in January 1920. stops to pose for a photograph. The general asked Buckles where he was born and Buckles told him Harrison County, Mo. "Just 43 miles, as the crow flies, from Linn County where I was born," Pershing said. "It impressed me that the general and I had something in common," Buckles said."

There’s a reason, I believe, that we don’t live much longer than 100 years. Too many things change, and the world you leave is not the world you entered.

Imagine, in thirty years there might not be any more WW II survivors.

Buckles went to San Francisco after he was rescued

And if the code pinko crowd had been present then they'd have hated him too.

Anybody have a clue as to how many living WWI veterans are still around?

In the article there is a graphic that says Buckles is the last American WWI vet, and the only other living vet is Canadian.

Can you believe we are down to the last two?

I mean, my husband’s grandfather fought in WWI for the Germans. My mother remembers the Civil War vets in the parades. It seems so strange. History hurtles on.
