Man kills baby and is shot to death by police
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | june 15, 2008 | Demian Bulwa

A young Turlock man parked a pickup truck on a dark country road outside his Central Valley city Saturday night, removed a baby boy from a car seat and then viciously beat the child in the street, fighting off passersby who tried to stop him until he was fatally shot by a police officer whose helicopter landed in a nearby pasture, police said today.

The 27-year-old suspect died immediately where he fell. The child, who according to police appeared to be 12 to 24 months old, was rushed to a hospital but was soon pronounced dead as well.

Police officials declined to identify the man this morning and said they did not yet know who the child was - or what his relationship was to his attacker. No information was immediately available about the baby's mother.

The suspect "had tunnel vision," said Stanislaus County sheriff's deputy Royjindar Singh, a department spokesman. "As people tried to intervene, to tackle him, he just went back to what he was doing. Anything and everything he could do to the baby, that's what he was doing."

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In TURLOCK??!! Like anywhere, it has its problems, but it and most of the Central Valley is conservative and God-fearing. You'd as likely see a gun rack on a pickup in Turlock as you would in Texas. There are billboards along Hwy 99 that quate scripture in big white letters on a black background.

That precious little boy who deserved to be loved and cherished is now in heaven. How much do you want to bet the man who killed him was not his biological father and/or not married to the baby's mother.

For those who are second guessing the actions of the witnesses, YOU WERE NOT THERE. You do not know all the facts and circumstances. It is very easy to armchair cowboy from the safety of your home. If the perp was on drugs, there are some that can give superhuman strength. Add to that the possibility that he might have had a weapon.

Thank God people did stop. And pity them for the horrific scene they will never be able to wash from their minds. Say a prayer for them, too.

Politics aside, this story has ruined my week. I just got up and stood in my boys room for a minute while they slept, and said a prayer for daughter in Maryland. I was going to come back in here and put on Supertramp and forget it, but I was drawn back to the story. A prayer for the cops and witnesses, too-they will have those images in their heads for life..

"DU`ers are condemning the police officer and are suggesting the guy who killed the baby is an Iraq veteran. "

Well, they're the experts on killing babies.....

More info at The Modesto Bee...

Update: Police kill man who beat baby to death

From this article:

Robinson, 52, jumped from his vehicle and confronted the man, who lunged at him. Robinson said the man wasn't screaming and wasn't loud, but was forceful, saying "demons" were in the boy.

"Give me the knife. Give me the knife," the man said as he grabbed for a pen in the fireman's front pocket.

"There was a total hollowness in his eyes," Robinson said, "like I could see right through to the back of his head."

I’m just saying if someone is high or crazy they can have super human strength at times and regardless of weapons sometimes it is hard to take them down because they don’t seem to feel pain.

That is the truth. The man who tried was a FIREMAN. He was not some cowardly wimp. I am sure he did the best he could under the circumstances.

Thank God for the police. There will be no trial. From the Modesto Bee article: "there was no hesitation on the part of the officer, who shot the attacker dead less the two minutes on the scene." They wouldn't say how many times the perp was shot. It reminds me of the case of the Carpenter family in Merced in 2000. A naked man broke into a house where 4 or 5 children were home being babysat by their 14-year old sister. The maniac killed two of the small children before the cops got there. When they arrived, they shot him 13 times. They probably had to stop to reload their weapons. No drawn-out trial for that sorry excuse for a human being either.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read an article where I had to stop reading to catch my breath a few times before I could finish it.

I feel faint.

An armed citizen may have been able to stop this animal. The blood of this innocent child is all over the hands of the gun control freaks in California. Have a nice day. The rest of us won’t...

“remember, every time the cops are called is a situation the caller could not deal with him/herself and neither could anyone else on the scene. “

"DU`ers are condemning the police officer and are suggesting the guy who killed the baby is an Iraq veteran."

I not trying to act as an apologist for the DU, but I couldn't believe that any human beings would find the beating to death of a baby acceptable, so I ventured over there to read the thread. I was right. The posts, except for a few usual anti-gun/Bush responsibility types, are pretty uniform in their hate for the monster who committed this atrocity. I didn't see a particular one condemning the police officer but I did see,

"The officer should have shot to wound......and let the crowd finish him off"

and

"Too bad the first few to stop were unarmed. I would have shot the ( expletive deleted by Mila) on the spot."

I know that I will never see eye to eye with the political ideology embraced by those who frequent DU but, for the most part, they seem to be on the same page in this particular case. p>

I don’t know... Maybe I’m a “rare breed” but as a mother, I don’t think I would’ve thought twice about getting involved if I saw a baby getting beaten so terribly... I might not have jumped in alone, but if there were others I would’ve probably thought of SOMETHING to stop it! *shaking head*

Too many people in these times are so self-focused that they wouldn’t get involved no matter how little the danger to themselves. I wonder how many true heroes are left in our world, honestly...

Please note: I am not blaming the witnesses and bystanders - I wasn’t there and I don’t know all the circumstances in this case. I’m just commenting on this in light of things I’ve seen with my own eyes...

Just another case of "When the good guns show up, the crime ceases!" Too bad the good guns didn't show up in time to save the baby's life.

Reinforces the saying -

WHEN SECONDS COUNT, THE POLICE ARE ONLY MINUTES AWAY!

In Indiana, if several dozen adults stopped to help, at least two would have been armed (statistically). But then, Indiana is civilized.

Firearm? I would have bodily tackled him and taken a beating myself if necessary to save the baby.

The FR cop-haters...

I've been posting here for a couple of weeks, and have been lurking here a little longer than that.

I have never encountered a 'cop-hater' at FreeRepublic.

If you find so many of us disgusting, why hang out here?
