Former U.S. officer training Hamas military

GAZA CITY — U.S. volunteers with military backgrounds have been recruited to help train the new Hamas army in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian sources said one of the Americans was former U.S. Army captain Fares Al Ashi.

"This information is important for the youth," Al Ashi said during a briefing to visiting journalists in Gaza City.

The sources said Al Ashi, a specialist in explosives and weapons, had been trained in South Carolina during his years with the U.S. military.

"We give them general information about the explosives, those manufactured locally and the Israeli ones, because those people always reach the dangerous places before we, the bomb squad, do."

Al Ashi and the other Americans were said to have been identified as Muslims who joined the U.S. military in the 1990s. The sources said the Americans relayed U.S. military methods and training to Hamas for its war against Israel.

The Hamas army has been equipped and trained by Iran. But Palestinian sources said some Muslims in the United States have provided funding and expertise to the new Hamas regime and military.

In May 2008, Hamas police launched a police training program assisted by the U.S. trainers. The four-month training course has been directed by Maj. Khalil Hejo and seven other officers.

"In the past, a brigadier general used to run this administration in addition to 250 officer trainers, but now, seven trainers and I oversee the whole program," Hejo said.

Foreigners, as you define them, can’t enter thye US military. If they are green card holders, i.e., legal permanent residents, they can. Currely, 35,000 serve in the military and can apply for expedited citizenship. I gather you would like to prohibit green card holders from serving.

We have infiltrators in the military. We need to make sure no illegal aliens, foreigners, or those with criminal records are admitted into the military. It will not complete eliminate the problem but it would greatly reduce it.

I agree, though I certainly support allowing legal immigrants to serve, and to expedite their citizenship. This individual was an officer, thus an American citizen prior to enlistment. The problem is the vetting, not citizenship status.

“We are finished. Former US Military personnel training Hamas. God forgive us, we are finished..”

And when we aren’t doing that we’re training the Zetas in Mexico so they can come here and help run the Mexican drug cartels taking over the entire country. Then the congress sends Mexico 1.5 Billion for them to ‘fight crime’ while Hezbollah hides out there and other Latin American countries.

Someone wants this country finished. I’m afraid the perps are in our government.

“We need to make sure no illegal aliens, foreigners, or those with criminal records are admitted into the military”

Too late. The military already reduced their standards to include criminals and foreigners. Have you seen the TV ads for recruiting in spanish?

True, but this MUST be combined with border/immigration patrol, so the illegals can't freeload off of the efforts of our native sons. Its bad enough that I have to pay taxes to support medical and social freeloaders and to pay off undocumented loans; I draw the line at paying with my sons. Its one thing--a duty-- to defend your own, but quite another to be forced to defend the ungrateful and undeserving.

I have not seen the Spanish language ads for recruits. Just what we don't need - soldier who cannot speak English.

Not long ago, History Channel had a series about criminal gangs expanding in our military. Many were Hispanics. The danger of having criminals and foreigners infiltrate the military is obvious.

BTW, the Army stationed in Texas is now training Egyptian SOLDIERS to locate and destroy underground tunnels to help protect Egypt's borders. Yet nothing is done about ours. Rep. Ted Poe want to know why.

“We’re not a nation with any interest in our own survival. It’s that bloody simple.”

The same can be said about Israel, as long as it allows Olmert to remain in power.
