"Not all of this area that would be opened is deep water requiring special techniques. This would include lots of area that is reachable with jack-ups."

In 2001 crusde was selling for $16-$26/barrel. The industry was going through massive layoffs. Any new reservoirs developed would have had to be very easy pickings.

An example of what happens when you try to cross the ailse for a ‘new tone in Washington’ or ‘to just get along’ instead of taking care of business for the folks who elected you.

Bush`s move will put public pressure on Congress to lift their legislative ban on drilling.

This is a decision the Prez should have made years ago.

I agree. But I have to give him credit for finally doing something besides just giving a speech about it.

"and before I leave you to your ignorance..."

Given that I am in the industry with an insiders view I'd say you are the one coming off quite ignorant and emotional. Here's atip for you. With each passing year each reservoir found is usually smaller and more difficult to get to, hence, more costly.

Yes I am! I think this is common ground between the Dems and Repubs. I have seen several political cartoons depicting the congress as the culprits, lately, and usually the political cartoons go right for the Republicans throats.

He just put Ms. Pelosi into check. This is a good move, we’ll see if Congress responds in kind.

I went back and re-read my post and I can see how that could have happened. No biggie. ;-)

Well the Republicans in Congress have already said they are going to keep Congress in session for the August break....... now they have a solid topic to rail on: "We won't go on break until we lift the ban on offshore drilling."

I think he has tried to pass an energy plan more than once. Even under the previous Congresses, the dims could filibuster.

The average price in 2001 was $19 to $30.

http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/hist/rclc1m.htm

Drilling and exploration leases didn’t come to a complete stand still, but it certainly slowed way down.

If President Bush had done this in 2001, the survey crews would have welcomed the work hired by the MMS. It probably would have taken until 2003 for the actual lease sales to occur. With average prices ranging from $28-$36, there certainly would have been bidding, but not the huge prices that would come today.

A couple more years for detailed survey work and exploratory drilling as prices rose to an average of $46 to $65 in 2005.

I think if he had done this early 2001 we would be see platforms being built today and production not far away.

Hey, good point! Maybe we should all bring this up when we call to thank him for this latest news. Nothing major just a few words about securing the border. Get across two points with one phone call.

When I was a kid I didn’t understand how the government could allow the great depression to go on, year after year, and not take action to stop it. Now I totally understand.

Just called Cantwell of Washington state and was told that she has never supported off-shore drilling and hasn’t made up her mind how she will vote when this comes up in Congress. She has “grave environmental concerns”. I told the guy on the phone that her job is not secure come this November and that her “environmental” concerns are affecting the US economy.
