Shoot First, Ask Later - In Prince George's, a drug bust goes awry.
Washington Post ^ | August 7, 2008 | Masthead Editorial

THE DRUG raid by Prince George's County law officers on the home of Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo last week was a Keystone Kops operation from start to finish.

Acting on a tip that a 32-pound package of marijuana had been sent by Federal Express from Arizona to Mr. Calvo's home (addressed to his wife, Trinity Tomsic), Prince George's police swung into action. Which is to say they got on the phone, calling law enforcement agencies to see who might have a SWAT team available to bust the unsuspecting Calvo family. (It seems the police department's own team was tied up.) After being turned down at least once, they finally struck a deal with the Prince George's Sheriff's Office, whose track record with domestic disputes is extensive but whose experience with drug busts is slight. And it showed.

i am just sick about this. what is wrong with the police in this country...and i have in the past been a supporter but these days between the militarization of our forces, the constant stories regarding taser abuse, and their use by counties as income producers...i am really in fear of them.

didnt see whether anyone else brought up this issue....this couple was white. is there any hint of racism or does PG treat all middle class couples the same regardless of color?

whatever happened to due process and actually asking questions before you proceed to slaughter the family pets, tie up the women, and beat the men? God help us. honestly.

IF SOMEONE SAID THEY WERE WILLING TO PROTEST i would literally take a day off and stand outside this county building until this jerk of a county executive says they will apologize. i cannot believe these guys.

Every LEO involved with this illegal home invasion should be personally prosecuted, and if convicted, thrown in jail for a very long time. This makes me sick.

Take another look. Those aren’t muzzles — they are “gentle leader”-type head collars used as training/leash aids.

I should have read down the thread before I posted — I should have known our FReeper dog experts would have beaten me to it. :)

Even my dad, a Korean war vet and classic law and order conservative, is starting to look very skeptically at LE because of the frequency of crap like this. Then LEOs and their defenders come on these threads and blame citizens-at-large for the worsening attitudes toward cops.

It reminds me of some muslims who blame non-muslims for negative attitudes. Their criticism of the outrageous actions of their co-religionists is tepid at best — instead it’s all of our faults for being “haters.” /eyeroll

I know this has been all over the place and what I’m about to say is petty as heck but what was the mayor doing in his underwear with his M.I.L.?

The mayor was upstairs when his mother-in-law screamed at the site of the black-clad SWAT team storming the door.

He was getting dressed.

SWAT teams don’t wait for you to put on your pants when they come ‘knocking’.

At least he wasn’t still in the shower.

Hi D.C.

#1) Those fools didn’t know who they were messing with. When me and my attorney cross examine them in front of a jury, (Trial is set for March 10, 2009) they are going to know what hell on Earth is like.

#2) They were complete bumbling idiots. If you’re going to perjure yourself, you’d better make sure you have your bases covered. These f**kers had to fool a judge into issuing the Search and Seizure Warrant, but as my defense attorney said, their case against me had a hole big enough in it that she could drive a truck trough.

They made such glaring errors that if it weren’t for the seriousness of the situation, it would be funny.

When it’s over, their careers and lives will be in ruins.

>If anybody recalls...there is a FREEPER in Baltimore that had the Maryland Transit {Airport] police come to his door and arrested him...took his computer....a legal handgun...and marched him off because they thought he had phoned in a bomb threat to the Baltimore Airport.

>Of course it wasn’t him. The police googled George Orwell and his name popped up....as he is an avid Orwell fan.

>Long story short....he’s got a multi-million dollar lawsuit pending against them.

>PS: Good Luck George!

Met with attorney today. The interrogatories and documents we requested via court order should be arriving soon (they’re actually overdue - she’ll notify the court and the state could be fined if these documents aren’t here by this Friday).

Next step is to depose the main culprit of the six named in the lawsuit. This will take place in mid-September. It means he must go to my attorney’s office where we will both interrogate him under oath.

“Good luck, and keep us posted on what happens!”

I respect the police and understand the difficulties of their work. However, there’s been a growing problem with officers abusing their authority. That has to stop.

I hope Mayor Calvo can finally galvanize the necessary changes to make this happen.
