Plot thickens in Denver death

Ottawa man's death still a mystery: The mystery deepens in the case of an Ottawa man found dead in an upscale Denver hotel room — a pound of highly toxic sodium cyanide in a jar beside him. More than a week ago, Saleman Abdirahman Dirie, 29, told his Somalian family out of the blue that he was leaving to vacation in Denver. On Monday, he was found in a fourth-floor room at the ritzy Burnsley Hotel about four blocks from the Colorado state Capitol. He had been dead for several days. Yesterday in Ottawa, a quiet west end family was struggling to understand what happened. They said it’s a mystery to them and wondered how the large-framed, quiet, good, smart boy ended up where he did. U.S. authorities — including Denver Police, the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force — were also trying to unravel the mystery. Why Dirie had the substance in the first place is unclear and Denver Police are not calling the death a homicide, suicide or even suspicious. They are conducting a death investigation but have found nothing to suggest foul play. “It’s an isolated incident,” said Denver Police Det. John White. He said they are still waiting for the coroner’s report to determine how to proceed but emphasized “it’s still a very active investigation.” Wright said it’s still too early to say whether Dirie’s death was a suicide. The Denver medical examiner’s office won’t be able to determine whether cyanide killed Dirie or announce a cause of death until toxicology reports are done.

The Burnsley Hotel is very nice. Maybe he had the Do Not Disturb sign out.

The other way around. People get used to seeing him about.
Members of the planning group have been there for months.

Yes, I bet they are freaking out. But lying low, because of the convention coming soon. It’s not real swell down by the State Capitol, if I recall.

Sure, everybody walks around with a pound of cyanide.

“It’s an isolated incident,”

Of course. Nothing to see here. Move along. Go to the mall and buy something.

I don’t think my mall carries biohazard suits.

Don’t be crazy. Fill your house with as much cheap imported crap as you can muster. It’s the patriotic thing to do.

That phrase has been used so often, in such diverse situations, that I have totally lost sight of what it actually means. I should HOPE it is an “isolated incident” when some foreign nutter dies, in a fancy hotel in Denver, within inches of a pound of cyanide! Furthermore, I hope it remains an “isolated incident”.

God forbid, however, that dim Dems avoid the Obamassiah’s big “sermon in the stadium” because of a few nasty terrorists. That's probably the reason for the obfuscation on the part of law enforcement.

WORKING THEORY: Somali is out of work in Canada. Goes to his favorite “house of worship” and another guy says “Hey, you need some work?” Guy says “Yep.” other guy says “I got a job for you. Heres a ticket for ya.” “Take this jar to Denver, stay in this hotel. The room will be paid for. Check in and wait for a guy named Abdulla ben Falafel to call. Meet with him and give him the jar. Whatever you do, do not open the jar.” Somali goes to Denver, opens the jar. Found dead.

Very odd that a terrorist would use sodium cyanide rather than hydrogen cyanide (deathcamp Zyklon B).

Any amateur chemist knows the differences are very important in lethality.

Sodium cyanide takes a very strong acid to convert to the highly lethal hydrogen cyanide which boils off at room temperature as cyanide gas.

Sodium cyanide is a common industrial chemical used mainly to purify gold.

Either he was a goofball jihadist wannabe or a very clumsy jeweler.

Perhaps HYDROGEN cyanide (deathcamp Zyklon B) would arouse suspicion when purchased, whereas the common industrial chemical SODIUM cyanide would have more plausible reasons for being in someone's possession.

Does this mean that airport screening at DIA will not find WMD’s carried in tourist luggage? Are we only checking for weapons, explosives and oversized mouthwash?

Belated comment: Are our law enforcement agents idiots? How can anyone say that a dead man found with a pound of cyanide is not suspicious? The police and FBI are either morons or they are lying.

Agreed, purchasing sodium cyanide is much easier. The problem is converting it to hydrogen cyanide.

You need very pure hydochloric acid, a fully contained atmosphere. An industrial labratory..... Self-contained breathing apparatus, chem suits, gloves, TRAINING, lol.

Yeah, a hotel room bathroom sink ain't gonna make ya Mr. Wizard. It's gonna make ya Mr. Dead Jihadist.

AFTER the body was discovered and autopsied the police were sent back to look for cyanide. Likely, the coroner opened up the body and smelled almonds, a telltale sign of cyanide poisoning they are trained to smell.

In any case, there are a host of pathogens at every hardware store that nut-cases can attempt to use to obtain "martyrdom".
