The USS McFaul is a Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.

Godspeed to the USS McFaul and her crew!

They don’t sail around that region all by themselves. There is more to this story..

The “destroyer” designation is misleading. These are not your granddad’s tin cans dropping depth charges on U-boats. They are guided-missile pocket cruisers with much of the capability of an Aegis. This one ship can protect a huge swath of territory against any aerial incursion.

I kinda doubt anything too serious going on...but its nice to see a US warship in the area....I apologize to all for such a short rough post...i.e. not much info and such... I haven’t posted an article in a long time, but I read the posts here on a regular basis and thought you all would like to know as soon as the USS McFaul docked.

I thought for sure it was going to be some supply ship or tanker. Good on President Bush for sending a Destroyer. Hope it stays there a while.

Too bad the Moskva made it back to Sevastapol...
Is it bad to hope for a confrontation that sends the BSF to the bottom of the Sea?

Aegis destroyer carrying humanitarian supplies which any dinky freighter can do? This is more than humanitarian mission for sure.

Probably best for us and the Georgians now that everything goes smoothly from here on.

We'd lose some people and assets too in any confrontation that got serious enough turn into a shooting war...

I think Putin / the people who are in power and run things in Russia have tipped their hand with this incursion into Georgia. At least now we should all be warned as to what the true nature of Russia's intentions are, and we can act accordingly.

Well, if the Russians were looting the Georgian towns and the military bases, if you just sent over a freighter why wouldn’t they just loot that too once it starts unloading stuff?

This makes sure they behave themselves and the supplies get to the people who need them, not the invading army who would probably steal the stuff to sell on the black market...

Earlier reports had the destination as Poti. Might have just been journalistic error or a decision to avoid a confrontation since the Russians are still in and around Poti. I gather Poti is the bigger, more capable port in normal times.
